Afghan cuisine in Melbourne can be found in Dandenong, in fact I think the most well-known and loved is Afghan Rahimi on Walker Street. The restaurant is absolutely elegant with its décor resembling some sort of royal venue with its pristine wooden chairs and marble tables. It’s food is equally tasty and popular among locals to the area.

I have visited Afghan Rahimi several times, including for functions and family/friend gatherings. It’s a great location to show friends and family why Afghan cuisine is so exciting and delicious. During my first visits, I was so amazed with the service, quality of food and just how amazing some of dishes were.
I was so in awe of the delicious, tender lamb and chicken skewers. The meat was cooked to perfection with dry pieces and just some of the nicest spices and sauces, tzatziki and their version of chimichurri, to pair with the meat. The meat come on huge metal skewers – which were shocking to begin with due to their size but created such an authentic experience.
The restaurant usually has people dining in at all hours of the day. It is a well known and loved establishment within Dandenong. It sits on the edge of Little Afghan. It’s easy to walk from Dandenong Station to the restaurant and parking is free in the evening, but otherwise there is free parking in the side streets.
To get the most of the experience, I recommend ordering one of their many banquets. The following is what you get for $38 per person by ordering Banquet 1:
- steamed dumplings (Mantu)
- Afghani traditional rice (with sultana and carrot)
- chicken tikka and lamb backstrap skewers
- meatball kofta, borani banjan (eggplant) and salad
- naan bread and dips (chatni)
It’s worth noting that there is Banquet 2 and 3, which have the same dishes but with added additional main courses and dessert and a few other extras depending on which one you choose.
My experience at Afghan Rahimi
I always have a great time at Afghan Rahimi. The food comes out at a reasonable time and I am always enjoying their skewers and rice. Their meatball and dumpling dishes are also incredibly delicious and represent flavours that I am not accustomed to.
They also offer some really decent takeaway deals, including meals for 2 for $50.
