KoBQ – Aspendale Gardens – Korean barbecue near Keysborough and Chelsea on a busy road

Located along Springvale Road in Aspendale Gardens, KoBQ beckons with promises of a Korean all-you-can-eat buffet with an abundance of options, housed within the former location of Michelangelo’s. While navigating to the restaurant may pose a slight challenge for those arriving from the north by car, the buffet experience that await make the journey well worth it.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the tantalising aromas wafting from within, drawing us closer to the promise of a culinary feast of your choosing from a wide variety of options including barbecued meats, hot pot or fried chicken.

As we entered the restaurant, we were greeted by the sight of an expansive buffet spread, offering a tantalising array of Korean barbecue meats, sushi, hotpot delights, dim sum delicacies, and an assortment of desserts. The menu, though extensive, presented a diverse selection that catered to various palates (essentially, there was something for everyone).

Opting for the lunch session, priced at $44.90, we eagerly sampled the offerings, noting the 10% surcharge on Sundays. Children aged 4 to 9 could partake in the feast at half the price, ensuring a family-friendly dining experience.

The highlight of our meal was undoubtedly the selection of Korean barbecue meats, featuring an array of beef, pork, chicken, prawns, mussels, and calamari. Each morsel had to be grilled personal preferences at the table with the hot plate, which sometimes was too hot (so get some help if you need it). The meats go well with the variety of sauces from the sauce station. The extensive sauce station (with more than 20 options) provided a delightful accompaniment to our meal, with favourites including the salt and pepper sauce and Viet mint sauce.

While we bypassed the hotpot, sushi, and pastries (probably from Costco), they appeared satisfactory, albeit somewhat incongruous amidst the predominantly Asian-inspired spread. Despite this, they looked interesting and delicious and were being selected other patrons at the buffet.

The restaurant’s interior exuded a modern yet welcoming ambiance, although we noted a lack of large tables for larger groups. Each table boasted a barbecue plate and induction stove for hotpot, accompanied by a jug of chicken stock—an unsuspecting addition that caught us by surprise but very necessary and was added to hotpots.

  • A variety of bain-marie dishes including beef bulgogi and japchae
  • A variety of meats. I found the Wagyu Chuck Roll to be my favourite selection.
  • Dessert stand with a variety of cakes and jelly cups
  • This is the hot pot stand

As we indulged in our culinary adventure, we were mindful of the two-hour session limit, ensuring we made the most of our time amidst the gastronomic delights.

Be sure to check out the ice-cream freezer near the front counter for an array of cold desserts.

KoBQ offers a satisfying Korean buffet experience that caters to both adventurous food enthusiasts and casual diners alike. While navigating to the restaurant may pose a slight challenge, the culinary treasures that await make the journey well worth it. From the succulent barbecue meats to the diverse array of dishes, KoBQ promises a memorable dining adventure that tantalises the senses and leaves patrons craving for more.
