Close to the Maxwell Food Centre is the Amoy Street Food Centre. You can walk there within 5 minutes as it is literally on the other side of the block. I would normally visit Maxwell Food Centre, but given I visited on a Monday when Tian Tian Chicken Rice is usually closed I decided to pay Amoy Street Food Centre a visit to try different vendors.
The Amoy Street Food Centre is similar to the Maxwell Food Centre and has a similar number of vendors. There are some really good, award winning vendors at this food center such as Noodle Story and Ah Ter Authentic Teochew Fishball Noodle.
Like most food centers, they are usually pretty quiet around 9 am to 11 am on weekdays which is the time most tourists start making waves during the day.
Although we were keen to try Noodle Story, it wasn’t open until 11 am so we opted for some Hong Kee Beef Noodle for S$8 and also some Dry Fishball Noodles with soup for S$10 and Fishball Soup with offal for S$4 from Ah Ter Authentic Teochew Fishball Noodle.
The Hong Kee Beef Noodle came with chili paste sauce. Its soup and noodles were unremarkably good.
The Ah Ter Authentic Teochew Fishball Noodle noodles and soup were really tasty. The fish balls were made with real fish and had a pleasant, distinctive fishy taste. I liked the flavor of the dry noodles which came with chili sauce and flavorsome gravy that smothered the noodles and also loved the fish ball soup which came with lots of offal and pork mince.
I love visiting hawker food centers because they are super affordable and allow each person to pick and choose whatever dish they want for around S$5 to S$10. It’s simple to claim a table most times, but there are fewer tables during busy morning, lunch and dinner hours. The price of food is what is advertised and usually there are no major surprise costs. Although sometimes there are extra charges for taking plastic sauce bowls, getting food takeaway or even extra cutlery. You know you won’t break the bank by visiting a hawker food center.
