Angkor Cafe – Melbourne – traditional Cambodian cuisine with a modern twist

On Spencer Street towards the north end, Angkor Cafe stands as a delightful Cambodian restaurant in Melbourne, offering an authentic taste of Cambodian cuisine. Its accessibility by public transport adds to the appeal of this culinary gem, making it a convenient destination for those seeking a flavourful journey through Cambodian flavours.

Despite its small size, Angkor Cafe boasts popularity, and for larger groups, bookings are essential. We secured our reservation effortlessly through Quandoo, finding the process to be user-friendly and efficient. The intimate setting enhances the dining experience, providing a cosy atmosphere that invites patrons to indulge in the rich and diverse offerings on the menu.

The menu at Angkor Cafe proudly showcases Cambodian cuisine, with its pièce de résistance (signature dish) being the Fish Amok—a steamed fish curry priced at $31.5. We couldn’t resist trying this signature dish, and it proved to be a highlight of our meal. The barramundi option, brimming with flavours, was a testament to the culinary prowess of Angkor Cafe. The dish, accompanied by a fragrant sauce, was so delightful that we savoured every last bite. (We finished the entire fish, which was boneless and oozing with flavour. I wish there was more of it.)

In addition to the Fish Amok, we explored other offerings on the menu. The Chicken Skewers, priced at $22.9, arrived with sliced baguette pieces and a pickled salad, although the menu indicated a papaya salad. Upon inquiry, a small serving of papaya salad was graciously provided, adding a tangy and refreshing element to the ensemble.

Complementing our meal was the Egg Fried Rice, a simple yet satisfying addition to the feast, priced reasonably at $12. The combination of dishes allowed us to experience a diverse range of Cambodian flavors, showcasing the culinary versatility of Angkor Cafe.

Navigating the ordering process was made convenient with the option to use a QR code on the table. However, we found paying at the counter to be a preferable choice. Not all sides were reflected in the QR menu, and paying in cash helped avoid additional fees.

It’s worth noting that a Sunday surcharge of 10% was applied to the bill. While this is a common practice in some establishments, it’s beneficial for patrons to be aware of such surcharges in advance.
