Situated just a stone’s throw away from Sunshine Train Station, Café Sunshine & Salamatea House seems like an inviting café thanks to its atmosphere, customer service and interesting array of dishes. Despite its unassuming exterior, this small restaurant packs a punch when it comes to flavour.
During our visit, we opted for the Chicken Curry priced at $22 and the Lamb Curry at $23, both of which were served with generous portions of fragrant basmati rice. Upon receiving our meals, we were pleased to find that each curry came with its own individual bowl separate from the rice, allowing us to share and savour the unique flavours within our group.
Highlights | Nice place to sit down for some curries, rice and a drink. Enjoyed both their chicken and lamb curries, and their flavoursome rice. |
Cost | $40-$50 for two people with two curries and rice and a drink each |
Location | 21 Dickson Street, Sunshine VIC 3020 |

One highlight of the meal was the basmati rice, which was served in a larger bowl adorned with vibrant berries and delicate shavings of carrots. The rice itself was cooked to perfection, with each grain boasting a fluffy texture that served as the perfect accompaniment to the rich and aromatic curries.
Speaking of the curries, we found both the Chicken Curry and Lamb Curry to be delightful in their own right. The Chicken Curry impressed with its subtle sweetness, thanks to the addition of berries, while the Lamb Curry offered a more robust flavor profile, with tangy tomatoes and a satisfying crunch from the vegetables.
To complement our meal, we indulged in a Chai Latte priced at $5, which greeted us with a comforting aroma of cinnamon—a perfect beverage to warm both body and soul on a chilly day.
While the weekend surcharge of 10% and 15% on public holidays may deter some, we were heartened to learn that Café Sunshine & Salamatea House extends a 20% discount to refugees—a gesture that speaks volumes about their commitment to inclusivity and community support.
We found the venue to be dimly lit and it was hard to see what we were eating,
Café Sunshine & Salamatea House offers a delightful dining experience that marries delectable cuisine with a warm and welcoming ambiance. Whether you’re craving a comforting curry or a soothing cup of chai, this charming eatery is sure to leave you feeling satisfied and uplifted.
