Chargrill Charlie’s – Mosman – even celebrities visit this famed chargrilled chicken shop

There are a few good restaurants on this road in Mosman. Chargrill Charlie’s Mosman manages to stand out from the crowd with its distinctive bright red and yellow. On my visit, there was a flurry of customers around dinner time and a lot was ordered for take-away. The shop doesn’t have much seating space, but if you do spend some time in the restaurant there is a star studded wall with heaps of celebrities from Russell Crowe, Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman who have made appearances at this popular chicken shop.

According to Chargrill Charlie’s website:

Our famous chooks are free of chemicals and chargrilled to perfection in our patented ‘clean’ chicken rotisserie.

This special way of grilling maximises the char that you want and minimise the stuff you don’t.

The chicken is really good. On the night I visited, literally every customer purchased their chicken. They serve heaps of sides, from fries to roast vegetables, and other dishes to go with their rotisserie chicken, including beef brisket, mac & cheese, and heaps more. They do three kind of fries, including shoestring fries, sweet potato fries and big cut wedges. Plus there are even burgers and fried rice on the menu.

There was a lot to choose from, which made it tempting to choose a variety of dishes and salads. Luckily there are some combo packs with chicken and either chips, salad, roast vegetables or fried rice starting from $11.9.

A great chicken shop with heaps of locations

The dine-in experience is more of an afterthought. Most of the tables and chairs look like they came from a second-hand store. You self serve water and your own cutlery.

We ordered two half chickens, one with chips, and the other with 3 salads. For the salads, we got their Japanese salad, pumpkin salad and avocado and spinach salad. Plus they gave us two boxes of mac & cheese for free! One chicken was their Greek version and the other was their Portuguese version. I think the Portuguese version is the better of the two, but both were tasty and well spiced. There was nothing left at the end of dinner with two people.

One notable thing I couldn’t ignore was the humorous level of entitlement some of the customers had. (Maybe it had to do with the area.) If it happened once, fine, but it happened about three times in the space of 30 minutes from different customers which needs to be called out. One customers was incensed about having to pay 20 cents for a plastic bag, claiming her business just absorbed the cost. Another demanded they get extra free mac & cheese. Despite all this, the people at the counters were polite and took on board much of the “feedback”. Kudos to them.

It is definitely a place worth visiting for a quick take-out and their chickens are excellent.
