Dandee Donuts at the Dandenong Market – the must try fresh donuts with hot jam, crispy exterior and doughy interior

Dandee Donuts, with its vibrant purple and yellow truck, has earned its place as a cherished institution at the Dandenong Market since 1968. For me, a trip to this iconic vendor is a non-negotiable part of any visit to the market. The star of the show, undoubtedly, are the Hot Jam Donuts. Piping hot, cooked fresh daily, and astonishingly affordable at just AUD$1.50 each, they are a true delight. I wholeheartedly recommend trying them; I promise you won’t regret it.

Approaching the counter, you simply indicate how many donuts you’d like, and the magic happens. The donuts are deftly plucked from the hot oil, injected with a generous dose of jam, and liberally coated in sugar before being lovingly packed into a paper bag. It’s a messy affair, and you’ll want to have a napkin or wet wipe at the ready. The result, however, is nothing short of perfection. The exterior boasts a delightful crispiness, while the inside is wonderfully doughy, creating the quintessential jam donut experience.

Dandenong Market, nestled in the southeast of Melbourne, holds a special place in my heart, having been a part of my life since the 90s. It’s a bustling hub of activity, particularly in the mornings, with an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables available at remarkably affordable prices. The market’s size is impressive, housing an array of butchers, bakeries, and an eclectic mix of food and non-food stalls. For those seeking further information, the Dandenong Market website is a valuable resource.

Access to the market is convenient, with Dandenong Station just a 15-minute journey away. Alternatively, public buses and cars offer additional transportation options. While parking fees apply on the market side, a savvy choice is to park at Dandenong Plaza, conveniently located across the road, offering free parking.

The prices at Dandee Donuts reflect exceptional value. A single Hot Jam Donut is a mere AUD$1.50, or you can opt for the half-dozen option. For an extra burst of jam, a small additional cost of $0.20 cents per donut is well worth the indulgence. In my opinion, these delectable treats are an absolute steal.

Dandee Donuts is located within Dandenong Market in the food stall area (central area) and it is best to get in early, because those donuts can run out by around 12:30 pm. It is located here: Clow Street &, Cleeland St, Dandenong VIC 3175

Dandenong Market only opens on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and closes on some public holidays.
