Dessertopia can be a little hard to find during the day, but is probably easier to find during the night when the place glows up thanks to all the glow-in-the-dark treats. Walking in, the place is relatively cosy with dim lights to be able to show off the fluorescent glow-in-the-dark cakes and other desserts.
Highlights | Lookout for glow-in-the-dark cakes and other desserts. The venue feels a tad retro, while also feeling contemporary and relevant thanks to its many creations based on pop culture. |

South Melbourne is brimming with exciting places to relax with many famous cafes and restaurants along the many busy roads. This cafe is a nice venue for a quick break from the busy-ness of Clarendon Street, and South Melbourne in general. It has that retro feel with the pastels and the 80s vibe, but somehow manages to seem contemporary thanks to treats decorated in current, well-known pop culture franchises.
The cafe offers a range of cakes, many of which glow-in-the-dark and represent iconic pop culture such as devil fruits from hit anime One Piece, mushrooms from Nintendo’s Mario World, and Totoro from Studio Ghibli. There are also ice-cream and an array of drinks.
We ordered their Totoro cake which glowed a nice blue in the dimly lit café. The cake was $17.50, which isn’t cheap, but it was a nice, attractive looking dessert. The inside of the cake is just plain chocolate mousse and to be honest, didn’t have much special in terms of taste. Nevertheless it was a worthy looking treat for the eyes.
There were quite a few people at the café during my visit and there is more than merely glow-in-the-dark cakes. Be sure to experience the other stuff this café has to offer.
