On the grand stage of the Game Award Shows for 2023, Square Enix treated fans to a visual and auditory feast with the latest trailer for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, released on 8 December 2023. The spotlight of this enchanting trailer was undoubtedly the unveiling of the official theme song, “No Promises to Keep,” a mesmerising composition by the legendary Nobuo Uematsu and brought to life by the incredible vocals of Loren Allred.
The trailer expertly weaves a tapestry of nostalgia and novelty, showcasing characters whose destinies have taken intriguing turns since the original game. The presence of Zack Fair and Biggs hints at a narrative that diverges from the familiar path, leaving fans eager to explore the uncharted territories of their stories.
The tantalising glimpse of familiar locales like the Gold Saucer and Cosmo Canyon, coupled with the enigmatic Vincent Valentine, promises a visually stunning and emotionally resonant journey. Square Enix seems to have carefully crafted every detail, immersing players in a world that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly new.
Excitement reaches new heights as the trailer introduces Cid Highwind and Dyne (Marlene’s father), adding more intrigue about how these characters stories will be told. This expansion of the ensemble casts a wider net of possibilities for character-driven storytelling, keeping players on the edge of their seats to uncover the intricacies of their roles in the unfolding saga.
The return of beloved summons, including Titan and Phoenix, sparks joy among fans, while the enigmatic glimpse of a new summon with multiple reptile-like heads raises intriguing questions about the game’s evolving mechanics. My guess is that this the potential replacement of Typhon as the wind summon adds an element of mystery and anticipation to the summoning experience.
The theme song “No Promises to Keep” elevates the emotional resonance of the trailer, complementing the visuals with a symphony of nostalgia and fresh perspectives. Nobuo Uematsu’s masterful composition, combined with Loren Allred’s evocative performance, sets the tone for a truly epic adventure. Loren Allred offered her voice to songs in the hit The Greatest Showman.
The trailer doesn’t merely rely on the allure of the past; it boldly introduces new moments not witnessed in the original game. Scenes like Zack’s encounter with Biggs, Marlene, and Aerith post-experimentation by Hojo create an air of suspense, leaving fans speculating on the untold stories that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will unveil.
In a final crescendo of excitement, the trailer reiterates the game’s release date—29 February 2024—exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
