My first real experience of this delicious soup was at Founder Bak Kut Teh on Balestier Road. It might just look like rice and a bowl of cloudy soup, but that soup is astronomically good that all you will ever want is rice and the soup. Plus there are free soup refills.
Sometimes you just want a hearty bowl of rice and some soup. It’s a very simple, Asian way of eating. In fact, most Asians would be accustomed to this way of life since childhood where you are given a bowl of rice where you can add soy sauce for flavoring and each rice bowl is paired with some kind of soup.
Founder Bak Kut Teh is super affordable and well worth the visit. I was absolutely stunned with delight after my first visit that I decided to visit many more times later. The soup is peppery and herbal with the right balance and you’ll instantly be hit with flavor in the first mouthful that you’ll be wanting seconds very quickly.
The walls of the the restaurant, when I was last there, was filled with photos of people and their memories of the place. It is truly a humbling scene.
For around SGD$5 you can be set with just some soup and rice or you can go even fancier with some Chinese donuts, fried bean curd and steamed egg. The venue is family friendly and is designed to feel like you are a family gathering around the dinner table.
The original Founder Bak Kut Teh is located at 347 Balestier Road, Singapore 329777:
