British food and their chefs have a bad reputation. Thanks to people like Nigel Ng, aka. Uncle Roger, we are all the more aware of how bad it is when even their celebrities are getting traditional dishes like egg fried rice, green curry and ramen completely wrong. He has rightly lambasted the likes of Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson on his famous YouTube channel. It’s great to watch because it is hilarious how well he takes down his targets and, as a person whose family is rooted in Chinese restaurants, Nigel’s observations are always spot on. I recommend watching him if you haven’t already and you should start with his first video on a British BBC personnel Hersha Patel, aka. Auntie Hersha.
One person that Uncle Roger has been impressed by is Gordon Ramsay. I have to agree. Now, having been to his restaurant in Singapore Bread Street Kitchen I can safely say that Gordon Ramsay is truly a good chef. For a British chef, he manages to tower above many non-British chefs. While British food has a bad rap, Bread Street Kitchen is able to serve really, really good British inspired food thanks to Gordon Ramsay’s skills and knack for making food delicious and interesting.
You can find Bread Street Kitchen in The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. Making a reservation is necessary, particularly for the dinner sessions.
Bread Street Kitchen’s décor is stunning and modern. It’s definitely a fancy restaurant and this isn’t the sort of place to be visiting looking casual. What’s more, the restaurant huge top to bottom windows are just stunning.
The food is expensive, the famous Beef Wellington is SGD$80 and will require 40 minutes preparation time, while other mains start around $29 and only get more expensive. My friend always recommends getting the pork chops, but I noticed each time I visited that people love ordering the fish and chips.
Before your entrees arrive, you are served butter and an assortment of warm breads. True is its name. The bread was a really nice touch and all very delicious. We also ordered the chicken liver and foie gras parfait, madeira jelly, toasted brioche. I spread the liver and jelly onto the toasted brioche. Warm bread with the spread melting on top. Biting into it… crunch, yet soft, warm, buttery, slightly salty… delish. I could have sat there and eaten this all day.
All throughout service, our waiters were so kind and pleasant. I wasn’t expecting Gordon Ramsay to run out of the kitchen and expletives. You get such a different impression from this place thanks to his staff. We had a great time chatting to the staff and were happy to indulge in our photo taking.
For our mains, we ordered the pork chops (like I always do), which came with cherry tomatoes and mushroom, and veal with kale and pumpkin puree sauce. I love the pork chops because they come with this incredible glaze. It’s slightly sticky, yet full of flavor. We also added some chips on the side, which came with its own tiny pot of tomato sauce.
Once we finished, we were entitled to a whole jar of choc chip biscuits. It was really cute.
It’s not every day you visit a celebrity chef restaurant, certainly not Gordon Ramsay if you are based in Australia, and come away thinking it was worthwhile. It is genuinely good food and I’m recommending it.
