Kam’s Roast Goose – Hong Kong – a Michelin star restaurant that serves fragrant and succulent roast goose

Hong Kong is known for its many roast meats, from roast duck, roast pork, char siu and soya chicken. In Australia, it is very rare to find roast goose for sale. So it is a treat to see roast goose on the menu. On Hong Kong island, there is a place famous for its roast goose and each night, it even has a queue each night to match with hungry diners. It’s called Kam’s Roast Goose.

Roast goose is often compared with roast duck. For comparisons sake, ducks are omnivores, have lighter flesh and a very gamey taste, while geese are herbivores, have darker, fattier meat that tastes sweet and fragrant. A good roast goose is tender and have a balanced flavor, e.g., not too sweet, acidic or gamey. The added bonus is if the roast goose has its own decent layer of fat beneath the skin. Duck tends to have less meat, more bones and can be off-putting for some people. (I like both and don’t mind if I am served either meat.)

Kam’s Roast Goose is an institution and a long time favorite for the locals. If you have the choice, I think it is better to eat in than to dine out. By eating in, you get to experience the meat and the food in its proper format. However, if you decide that the line is too much or you’ve visited the restaurant too late in the night, takeaway is an option. (We arrived too late for a place in the queue, so we opted for a box of their delicious roast goose.)

The roast goose we bought was lean and tender. I often eat roast duck with my family, because my parents own a Cantonese restaurant so I have a good reference point. I can safely say that the Kam’s roast goose had more meat and was way more succulent than any roast duck I have tried. If you like roast meats, you will like what they have to offer at Kam’s.

As you can see, in a takeaway box below of the roast goose, there is a lot of meat with each portion and the skin is extra crispy and delicious. You are given some of the goose’s fats to dip the meat into. It’s tastes better than it sounds. The takeaway box was cheaper than dining in.

If roast goose is not your thing, you can rest assured that Kam’s Roast Goose also does a whole host of other roasts. Their other roasts, including their roast pork and char siu, are very good. If you dine in, you can order a typical Hong Kong lunch meal with rice, Chinese vegetables, choice of roast/s and a bowl of soup.

Kam’s Roast Goose is located at 226 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong:
