Found along Flemington Road in North Melbourne, just a stone’s throw away from the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Royal Children’s Hospital, Lanna Thai is a family restaurant for both locals and hospital staff or visitors alike. This Thai eatery has earned a reputation for its delectable cuisine and convenient location, making it a popular choice for those seeking a satisfying meal in the area. Our visit came after a friend working in the area highly recommended this restaurant as a place to visit for lunch.
Thanks to its proximity to tram lines 58 and 59, accessing Lanna Thai is a breeze, making it an easy place to visit. Upon entering the restaurant, one is greeted by a cozy ambiance that exudes warmth and comfort. The wooden furnishings and traditional Thai decor, including woven place mats and intricate statues, reminds guests of Thailand thus adding to the overall dining experience.
Highlights | Lanna Thai offers a range of curries, stir fries on rice and stir fried noodles (like Pad Thai) for around ~$20 a dish. The restaurant has a nice ambience and can be visited for those wanting a quick bite or even a catch to chat with someone (except when there are works happening next door). |
Cost | ~$20 a dish $50 for two with a dish each and a drink |

Due to the recommendation, we decided to sample some of Lanna Thai’s dishes. The menu boasted a diverse selection of Thai classics, with curry dishes and stir fried noodles like Pad Thai emerging as crowd favourites. Opting for the Crispy Pork and Asian Greens on Rice priced at $19.90, and the Tom Yum Noodle Soup priced at $18.50, we eagerly awaited our meal.
Both dishes arrived promptly and were well presented. The Crispy Pork dish was accompanied by a generous serving of Asian greens. While the pork was satisfactory, the cooked greens with garlic sauce had a nice flavour profile. Next up was the Tom Yum Noodle Soup, brimming with a plethora of toppings, including crunchy fried wonton skins, fish balls, and prawns. The addition of chili lent a spicy kick to the broth, leaving our taste buds tingling with delight, albeit causing the occasional cough.
With our meals came water glasses with ice cubes, as well as a charming water jug for refills.
While the restaurant seems like a great place for chats and catch-ups thanks to the usually quiet surroundings. We were interrupted a few times by the loud drilling and construction work next door,
Lanna Thai is a good restaurant for those visiting the area, because it’s a chance to get away from the hospital to enjoy some decent Thai cuisine. Plus its in a great location with easy access to trams and buses.
