Ng Ah Sio Pork Ribs Soup Eating House is located on Rangoon Road at a dead end of this street. It can be reached from either Novena Train Station or Farrar Park Train Station, Singapore. If you go by bus it takes 7 minutes not counting waiting time or by walking, it takes 15 minutes on foot in the blistering sun from Novena Train Station and 10 minutes from Farrar Park Train Station. At the end of the walk, the bak kut teh soup is worth the long journey.

Bak kut teh soup is famous in Singapore for its rich peppery taste, unlike its Malaysian counterpart which is a more herbal taste. My preference is definitely the Singaporean one. There is a lot of competition around which restaurant has the best soup. During my visit in 2022, I wanted to try one of the well-known establishments and came across Ng Ah Sio Pork Ribs Soup Eating House. Despite it being so out of the way, I wanted to make this journey and we did it on one of our free mornings.
It was a pain to get to the restaurant from Novena Train Station and felt that it’s a much easier trip coming from Farrar Park Train Station because the path has heaps of shopfronts, whereas there are no shopfronts along the walk coming from Novena Train Station.
The restaurant is rather cosy but with obvious renovations to bring some nice, modern flourishes to this still traditional looking hawker style restaurant. When it came time for us to order, we scanned the QR code and ordered everything we wanted. Our meals all came out at once and we booked our table in advance in case it was going to be busy.
My Ng Ah Sio Pork Ribs Soup Eating House experience
From the QR code menu, we ordered the following:
- Mee Sua Soup for S$3.8
- Preserved Vegetables (pickled cabbage) for S$3.8
- Braised Beancurd Skin for S$3.8
- Classic Pork Ribs Soup for S$7.8
- Teochew Braised Onsen Egg for S$1.2
- Fried You Taio (fried doughnut) for S$2
- Streamed Rice for S$1
Total came to S$27.54 with tax and service charge. (I guess it not being a typical hawker store means it can charge their 10% charges and 7% goods and services taxes.)
I thought the soup, beancurd and pickled cabbage to be the stars of the meal. I was slightly underwhelmed by the Mee Sua Soup because it was really mundane with neither the soup nor noodles being tasty. Though, the Classic Pork Ribs Soup had an excellent flavour and we had free soup refills on request.
The other thing to consider is that if you use any we wipes, you have to add them to the bill as well. It’s best that you don’t use the wet wipes and bring your own.
