Om Nom Kitchen at the Adelphi Hotel – Melbourne – an elegant dining room for high tea for mum or your special someone

I feel that Melbourne has so many great cafes and restaurants. You would be spoilt for choice when it comes to high tea options. Om Nom Kitchen is a place that does high tea and really well. It consistently ranks highly among recommendations and reviews.

Om Nom Kitchen is located within the Adelphi Hotel. It’s best to book in advance for one of their high tea sessions which start at AUD$75 per person where you get a glass of French sparkling, food and free flow of coffee and teas. The portions are sufficiently small, and that’s what high tea is about – trying several small bites with good company and relaxing tea/coffee or sparking.

On arrival at Om Nom Kitchen, we realized that there was no lift or easy access for us to bring our pram, so we had to carry it up all the stairs. We brought our toddler along for the experience. (This is just a word of warning if you have prams or anything similar.)

The service at Om Nom Kitchen is superb. We were warmly seated, offered drinks from their drinks menu and were introduced to everything that was brought out to us at our table. It was apparent to me that they had the method of running a high tea session down to wire. It was excellent.

The décor in the restaurant is really elegant and although it’s not a huge floorspace, it definitely felt like a luxury setting, well suited for high tea guests with plenty of gilded objects and flowers.

We weren’t big on alcohol, so they happily offered us mocktails to choose from. In addition, we were able to order tea and coffee and they offered a babycino to our toddler.

Our first course was the savory plate, which came with the following:

  • mushroom, thyme and bacon tartlet
  • scones with gruyere cheese and truffle honey
  • egg, potato, jamon and truffle sandwich
  • smoked salmon blini, creme fraiche, flying fish roe
  • confit duck waffle cone, cherry pate d’fruit and foie gras
  • chicken and leek vol au vent

I felt like a little kid, thinking which one should I start with. Each treat was delicious and satisfying. The variety and mix of food on the plate was brilliant. It’s not everyday that I tuck into foie gras or truffle flavor.

After savory, we had a short break to catch-up with our choice of tea.

For dessert, we were given a dessert tower where each person was given a raspberry macaron along with their own plate with the following:

  • passionfruit pavlova, fresh kiwi, strawberry
  • Om Nom layer cake – chocolate, coffee, cocoa nibs
  • lemon meringue profiterole
  • mango and coconut verrine, toasted coconut and mango crispy
  • lamingtart – raspberry jam, coconut ganache, raspberry crunch

They did an outstanding job with the presentation and taste of their desserts. Each tasted unique with their own flavor and texture. The Om Nom cake and lamingtart were my standouts.

We were able to sit around while after our session, because they were very attentive to us and made sure things came out quickly. (Not that we were pushing for things to happen quickly.)

I think Om Nom Kitchen is a great place for high tea for those special occasions and I along with my wife thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
