Pa Tong Thai – Melbourne – Thai restaurant in an old pub

Pa Tong Thai in Flinders Lane looks like a great destination for Thai. It’s well located in between Swanston and Elizabeth Street and is able to capture a lot of busy folk. There are lunch specials, but you have to be looking at their +$20 options to get something hearty and worthwhile.

HighlightsIt’s a nice, old pub that has been converted into a restaurant. There is a nice, cozy atmosphere.

It’s not difficult to find Pa Tong Thai on Flinders Lane thanks to its easily distinctive signboard and aqua paint aesthetic.

I came during a lunch period to give this joint a try, hoping to be wowed by a Thai restaurant with such an interesting look-and-feel and many colourful posters recommending their specials. I ordered their Fried Chicken on Rice, another colleague ordered their Curry Chicken on Rice, and another ordered their Crispy Pork on Rice. Aside from the Crispy Pork on Rice, the other two dishes were under $20, while the Crispy Pork on Rice was a tad over $20.

It seemed that only the Crispy Pork on Rice came with a bowl of soup, some salad and a nice dipping sauce. Whereas my dish of Fried Chicken on Rice seemed a little disappointing and boring. I really hoping for a bit more for the price, given it’s not the cheapest place to dine during lunch hour. The food tasted alright and unremarkable.

I realise I haven’t tried their best dishes like their noodles and larger plates/bowls, so I will have to come again to give them another shot.
