Pokemon Go Fest 2023 – 27-28 August 2023 – Mega Rayquaza, Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre along with Mega Diancie

Another year, another Pokemon Go Fest. This time around the festival focused on the trio legendaries from the Hoenn region in their Mega/Primal forms along with the Mythical Pokemon Diancie. The tickets were A$24.99 for the two day event over 27 and 28 August 2023. The Pokemon Go Fest is usually an opportunity to collect rare regional Pokemon, along with Shiny and Legendary Pokemon.

What happened on the day

On Saturday, there were four unique habitats that rotated throughout the day:

  • Quartz Terrarium: 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. local time, notably Heracross and a bunch of pink Pokemon
  • Pyrite Sands: 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. local time, notably yellow Pokemon
  • Malachite Wilderness: 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time, notably Oranguru and green Pokemon
  • Aquamarine Shores: 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time, notably Mareanie and blue Pokemon

Each habitat came with a Collection Challenge and awarded a badge, 1 Incense, a Pokemon encounter and some experience for completing them. The awards for these challenges had to be collected before the last hour of the habitat, not the end of the day.

While the notable raids were for Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre. The Special Research task eventually unlocked a Diancie and its Mega Energy. (If lucky, Carbinks would occasionally drop Diancie Mega Energy when captured.)

Throughout the day there were costumed Pokemon that spawned, including a Pikachu with either a red, yellow, green or blue crown and Snorlax wearing a hat.

On Sunday, all of the Pokemon that were available on Saturday spawned throughout the day. The major event was the introduction to Mega Rayquaza, along with Special Research tasks that allow players to Mega Evolve their own Rayquaza with the help of Meteorites. You get two Meteorites which teach Rayquaza Dragon Ascent.

Unfortunately there were no remote raid passes rewarded throughout the day. To have to pay 195 coin for one pass or 525 for three passes felt like a rip off. For me, the best chance of getting the most out of the event in Melbourne is actually visiting the central business district around Bourke Street.

Experience

In addition, for ticket holders the following Pokemon were attracted to Incense on each of the days:

  • Hisuian Growlith
  • Pawniard
  • Carnivine
  • Pachirisu
  • Unown

There were some other perks for ticket holders including increased shiny chance, receiving up to 9 raid passes per day, special 7 km eggs and up to 6 special trades per day.

The Shiny Pokemon debuts were:

  • Shellos (East Sea variant)
  • Shellos (West Sea variant)
  • Goomy
  • Joltik
  • Oranguru

I was able to catch all the following Shiny Pokemon (in order) on Saturday:

  • Shellos (West Sea variant)
  • Horsea
  • Horsea
  • Luvdisc
  • Audino
  • Pysduck
  • Wobbuffet

On Sunday:

  • Rayquaza
  • Oranguru

Overall, there were some decent catches across the two days. I managed to add a Shiny Rayquaza to my collection, along with some regional Pokemon like Carnivine and Pachirisu plus some new Shiny Pokemon like Oranguru, Psyduck and Shellos.
