Tucked away in the bustling Spencer Outlet Centre, near the entrance from Southern Cross Station, lies Potto—a hidden gem amidst a sea of hawker-style eateries and cafes. Despite its unassuming location, this charming restaurant stands out for its innovative approach to Asian fusion cuisine, drawing inspiration from Japanese, Thai, and Hong Kong culinary traditions.
The name “Potto” itself, derived from the Japanese word for pot, perfectly encapsulates the essence of the restaurant’s concept—one-pot dishes bursting with bold flavors and vibrant ingredients. I was eager to sample Potto’s offerings after a memorable encounter with their Roast Pork Roll at a food festival back in 2016. I recall the delicious, succulent meat nestled with fresh slaw and sauce. Finally, in April 2024, I had the chance to revisit and delve into their culinary delights and retry that memorable dish.

Upon entering, I was pleasantly surprised to find Potto buzzing with activity, with a diverse crowd of workers and visitors eagerly placing their orders and dining in. Despite the initial impression of being just another food court eatery, Potto’s menu boasted a tantalising array of dishes from rice to burgers and drinks, promising a culinary adventure like no other.
Opting for their Crispy Pork Roll priced at $15.50, I eagerly awaited my meal. The roll arrived promptly, brimming with succulent roast pork, crisp coleslaw, fresh apple slices, rich gravy, and creamy mayonnaise, all nestled within a crunchy bread roll. Each bite was a symphony of flavors, reminiscent of the unforgettable taste that had lingered in my memory since my first encounter. The unique combination of ingredients showcased Potto’s commitment to culinary innovation, setting it apart from the crowd.
To complement my meal, I indulged in their Portuguese Tarts priced at $3.80—a sweet treat that did not disappoint. The flaky pastry and creamy custard filling left me craving for more, further enhancing my dining experience.
While there was a slight hiccup with my drinks order, the impeccable quality of the food more than made up for it. The attentive staff ensured that any issues were promptly addressed, leaving me thoroughly satisfied with my overall dining experience.
Potto exceeded my expectations with its delicious offerings and inviting ambiance. Despite its unassuming location within the Spencer Outlet Centre, this hidden gem shines brightly among Melbourne’s culinary landscape. Whether you’re craving a hearty meal or a sweet indulgence, Potto promises a culinary journey like no other—a true haven for food enthusiasts seeking bold flavors and innovative dishes.
