The Prince of Yazh – Dandenong – Sri Lankan curries and really nice chili prawns

Nestled along Foster Street in Dandenong, the Prince of Yazh stands as a Sri Lankan restaurant offering a range of curries, soups and delicacies from this exciting cuisine. This restaurant offers some vibrant flavours of Sri Lankan cuisine.

Stepping into the Prince of Yazh on a bustling Saturday night, we were greeted by a warm ambiance and the inviting aroma of spices wafting from the kitchen. Despite not having a reservation, we were able to get a table. While the venue looks small, we were pleasantly surprised to find that there were more tables tucked away behind the saloon doors, ensuring that the venue could cater for more than just a few guests.

The menu, while small, boasts a delightful selection of Sri Lankan favourites. From enticing entrees to flavourful curries and sides like string hoppers and fragrant rice. With options ranging from Prawn Fry to Pumpkin Curry and String Hoppers, there’s something to satisfy palates looking for a nice Sri Lankan meal.

As we settled into our seats, we couldn’t help but admire the simple yet charming décor of the restaurant. The blue painted walls and hut-like feel added to the authentic Sri Lankan dining experience, creating a cozy atmosphere perfect for enjoying a leisurely meal with loved ones. Though the rooms are very dimly lit.

While the service was pleasant and attentive, we found that the food took longer than expected to arrive at our table. However, the wait was well worth it since most of the dishes met our expectations in terms of flavour and presentation. I put the wait down to the care the kitchen put into the dish, because our first dish was positively amazing.

We started our culinary journey with the Prawn Fry for $13, a delightful appetizer bursting with very spicy and succulent prawns. Although the portion size was small, each prawn was perfectly seasoned and accompanied by flavourful sliced onions and chillies, creating a nice combination of flavours with every bite. (Though, I was sipping a lot of water in between.)

Next, we sampled the pumpkin curry, a spicy yet satisfying dish that packed a punch. Despite requesting minimal spice, the curry was still fiery, but the addition of tender potatoes added a delightful contrast in texture.

While we thoroughly enjoyed the flavours of each dish, we couldn’t help but feel that the portion sizes were smaller than expected, especially given the prices. However, the quality of the ingredients and the authenticity of the flavours made it a memorable dining experience nonetheless.

We visited again Prince of Yazh another day and tried their “Fan Favourite” Squid Curry for $27 and Chicken Curry for $21, along with a Large Rice for $5. Both curries were nice, though we were left sweating profusely after only a few mouthfuls. The squid seemed plentiful, while the chicken was cooked well but still had bones in them (having bones isn’t a bad thing if you don’t mind, since it helps cook the chicken better.). The servers, on seeing us sweat, provided us some yogurt to help counteract the spiciness – which definitely helped. All while refilling our cups periodically – a sign of great customer service.

The Squid Curry was packed with sliced squid which was easier to eat and eat piece of squid still had its nice, chewy texture. But I wasn’t too enthralled by the dish. I much preferred the Pumpkin Curry we had the other night.
