Victoria by Farmer’s Daughters, located in Federation Square along the Yarra River, offers a dining experience that combines a commitment to fresh seasonal produce with a celebration of the diverse regions of the state. Located behind the Taxi Restaurant (if standing at Flinders Street Station), the restaurant can be a bit tricky to find, but a distinctive sign bearing the establishment’s name guides eager patrons to its entrance.
The restaurant’s philosophy is clearly outlined: “Victoria by Farmer’s Daughters showcases the philosophy of working with fresh seasonal produce and telling the stories of seasons as they come to life in each distinct region.” The venue invites diners to enjoy a choice between à la carte dining or a provenance set menu, the latter designed to reflect the seasonal availability of ingredients and offer a curated culinary journey.

Positioned to provide a scenic overlook of the Yarra River, the restaurant takes full advantage of its splendid location. The interior is thoughtfully presented with captivating projections and refined decor, creating an inviting atmosphere that extends to the open kitchen, where culinary magic unfolds.
Opting for the set menu priced at $85, we embarked on a gastronomic adventure that promised a selection of the restaurant’s best dishes. Enhancing our experience, we indulged in two mocktails—a Strawberry Mule and a Lemon Squash—adding a refreshing touch to our culinary journey.
The meal commenced with an array of enticing entrees: sourdough, zucchini and hazelnut, and mussel with fennel and dill. The fluffy sourdough set a delightful tone for the evening, while the zucchini and hazelnut dish showcased a harmonious blend of freshness and zest. However, the mussel with fennel and dill stole the spotlight (out of the entrée dishes) as the most exciting and flavourful among the entrees.
Moving on to the mains, we were treated to trout and beef, accompanied by hand-cut chips with spicy mayonnaise and a leaf salad. The chips, seemingly crafted on the premises and meticulously cooked, were a standout side dish, complemented by the fiery kick of the spicy mayonnaise. The beef, cooked to perfection, delivered a satisfying experience, but it was the trout that emerged as the star of the main courses. The trout looks deceptively simple, but was packed with zesty and fresh flavours.
For the grand finale, we indulged in pannacotta and marshmallow custard, providing a sweet and indulgent conclusion to our culinary journey. While personal preferences varied, with one favouring the pannacotta and the other the marshmallow custard, both desserts showcased the restaurant’s commitment to delivering a memorable conclusion to the dining experience.
Throughout our visit, the attentive service further enhanced our enjoyment, ensuring our water glasses were consistently filled and our needs were promptly addressed.
Victoria by Farmer’s Daughters delivers a superb dining experience, merging a commitment to seasonal ingredients with a carefully curated menu. The inviting ambiance, scenic river views, and thoughtfully presented interior contribute to the overall appeal. From the creative entrees to the delectable mains and indulgent desserts, each dish reflects a dedication to culinary excellence. The attentive service adds a touch of hospitality, making Victoria by Farmer’s Daughters a destination well worth visiting for those seeking a memorable and refined dining experience in the heart of Melbourne.
