Waya Japanese – Glen Waverley – rebirthed once and now an established restaurant

Waya Japanese restaurant along Kingsway has been around for over a decade. It used to be on the same side as the Village Cinemas entrance but has since moved to the other side of Kingsway and now has a second storey. If you want average food or are just hungry, Waya is a good destination.

Waya isn’t my first choice when it comes to Japanese cuisine in Glen Waverley, but at least it is an option when you aren’t sure what to order or have a decent crowd. The menu offers something for everyone and is moderately priced, though not quite a cheap eats price.

Waya has some nice interior seating and outdoor seating on its second storey. I really like the enclosed cubicles as it creates a nice space for the family.

When ordering, you order using the QR code on the table. The service is relatively fast.

Get a decent Japanese meal at Waya

I have visited Waya many, many times. The food is okay. Nothing on the menu stands out, literally nothing. But you will probably walk out full and at least enjoy the atmosphere with your company and the décor.

On one occasion, we ordered their Ramen with Tonkatsu for $15.80 and Unagi on rice for $16.80. The ramen, along with the tonkatsu, was so-so when it came to taste, but its presentation was rather meh. On the other hand, the unagi on rice was underwhelming – it needed something else to go with the mountain of rice. Maybe a good serving of tasty teriyaki sauce all over the plate or just another additional side.

My experiences at Waya always end up being the same, just decent and not too expensive. Waya needs a specialty dish, something that makes it a place to come back to other than being a restaurant offering below the average in terms of cost per dish/meal.
