It’s not everyday you expect to see a premium fried chicken restaurant, let alone one at the most extravagant in Singapore – Marina Bay Sands. But there is one. Yardbird Southern Table & Bar which serves southern American fried chicken. The restaurant occupies two floors, one for the restaurant and one for the bar. The upper floor is for the restaurant.
The venue is well decked out and has a very strong wooden barnyard aesthetic. (It matches the name of the restaurant.)
I opted for their Crab Cake for S$28++ as an entrée. The crab cake was definitely tasty but small and expensive. At the time, I felt that there were more inexpensive and equivalent tasty options at a hawker food center. Just a public service announcement, even though on the menu it is listed as S$28, you have to factor in the double ++ on a Singaporean restaurant menu which means plus 7% for the goods and services tax and another plus 10% for the service charge. All up, your whole dinner is whatever price is listed on the menu plus 17% on top. (It is ridiculous given my experience in Australia and the norm where all prices are inclusive of taxes and service charges.)
We also ordered their Chicken ‘N’ Watermelon ‘N’ Waffles for S$46++ which comes with their fried chicken, spiced watermelon and cheddar cheese waffle, their special for $38++ and corn bread for $10++. The Chicken ‘N’ Watermelon ‘N’ Waffles came with a decent serving of fried chicken which had a delicious coating and as expected wasn’t too greasy like KFC chicken. The waffles and watermelon were a nice addition to the meal, although I wasn’t convinced that there was any synergy amongst the three items on that plate.
They served their Bourbon Maple and Honey Hot sauces with the fried chicken. The Bourbon Maple was sweet and definitely had that bourbon smell and flavor, while the Honey Hot was a mix of slightly spicy but more sweet. I added these sauces to the fried chicken and waffles to good effect.
The special with more fried chicken and blue cheese wasn’t anything special (it was just more fried chicken) and the corn bread was just so-so. All up, the food was nice but probably didn’t justify the over S$150 bill for a few items. (We also ordered chips, but they never came to the table.)
We paid 10% service charge but I didn’t feel like I received any service other than really annoyed servers (for which I have no reason to think I caused or provoked). I admit I knew to expect the service charge and the goods and service tax because this was my fifth time to Singapore, but eating out at a restaurant in Singapore is really prohibitive for most families. If you want good tasting food then head to one of Singapore’s many (hawker) food centers.
