Hong Kong is renowned for some of the greatest film actors and actress of all time. Throughout the world, the likes of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung, etc are all household names. Hong Kong cinema is incredibly strong and has often delivered excellent martial films from Police Story, Ip Man and Legend of the Fist. This Avenue of Stars (星光大道), modelled on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, honors the legacy of its celebrities. It is located along the Victoria Harbour waterfront in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong.
If you are in Kowloon, the Avenue of Stars is located at the southern tip of the island. It is well within walking distant if you are in the city. It’s a pleasant walk along the waterfront. The railing has various actors and actresses handprints. It’s best to take the scenic walk during the daytime.
For us, we got a lot of mileage from just visiting The Garden of Stars where the famous Bruce Lee statue and several handprints modeled by the actors and actresses are located. You can also get an impressive view of Victoria Harbour and Victoria Island as well from where you are. The park is elevated above ground and it stands high enough to see over to the other side of the waterfront.
In the garden, you can come across several handprints. One in particular, Jackie Chan has a handprint and he even left a message. I literally grew up watching Jackie Chan films from Rumble in the Bronx, Police Story and Armour of God. I still think to this day his earlier films are better, because he did a lot of his own stuns and it is incredibly what he was able to do. (Remember that shopping center stunt in Police Story?) Also, he was one of the first people to popularize action comedy in films.
Jet Li also has his handprint and even leaves his signature on the plaque. I watched a lot of Jet Li film’s as well when I young, seeing The One, Unleashed, and The Forbidden Kingdom. Jet Li plays more serious roles, but like most Hong Kong celebrities he doesn’t stray far from unleashing his humor in films when needed. I always consider him a wise sage and his age now pits him perfectly as a mentor-like figure in films.
The Garden of Stars is a beautiful park and there are heaps of really nice scenic vistas. If you are lucky, you may be able to catch the light works that happen each night over Victoria Harbour.
Also, you can get a close eye of several statues honoring some of the most famous people who put Hong Kong cinema on the map. Bruce Lee is definitely one of them.
