Gumshara, nestled near Sydney’s central business district in Darling Square, offers a distinctive ramen experience that stands out despite its cafeteria-style setting. During my recent visit, the restaurant’s unique charm and the tantalising aroma of Japanese flavours left a lasting impression.
The small enclave exudes a lively atmosphere, and the cafeteria-style dining adds an element of authenticity to the experience. Ordering and collecting your food at the counter is straightforward, but be prepared for a potentially long queue outside. The honesty system, where patrons trust the order of those entering the restaurant, adds a communal touch to the overall vibe.

The menu is refreshingly focused on quality over quantity, featuring a selection of enticing ramen options. For a reasonable $15.5, you can indulge in a plain noodle and soup option, while the standard Tonkotsu ramen, priced at $19.5, comes adorned with BBQ Pork and Bamboo Shoots. However, the star of the show is undoubtedly the Pork Sparerib Ramen, priced at $28.5. I wholeheartedly recommend this dish – the deep-fried pork sparerib is a succulent masterpiece, generously basted with some of the best Japanese flavours.
What sets Gumshara apart is the customisation offered to patrons. The ramen can be tailored to individual preferences with additional sauces, adjustments to the soup’s richness, and the inclusion of condiments like chili or spring onion. The thick and flavourful ramen soup is a testament to the culinary expertise at Gumshara, leaving taste buds satisfied with every slurp.
Despite the bustling venue, the experience is enjoyable, thanks to the delicious ramen and the vibrant crowd. It’s worth noting the weekend surcharge when ordering, although this is conveniently waived if you opt to pay by cash. Furthermore, the communal spirit extends to the cleanup process, where patrons are responsible for putting away their bowls and plates after finishing their meal.
Gumshara offers a delightful journey for ramen enthusiasts seeking authentic flavors in a casual setting. While the limited menu may deter some, the quality of the dishes, particularly the Pork Sparerib Ramen, makes this restaurant a must-visit for those craving a memorable and flavourful dining experience.
