Hainan Chicken – Glen Waverley – now within Century City Walk and still serving Chicken Rice

We have tried Hainan Chicken in all its incarnations at Glen Waverley since December 2015. It has moved locations several times and we have no idea why. But at least it is around. It’s now located within Glen Waverley’s Century City Walk and only opened at the end of December 2021. One thing is constant about this restaurant and that is that they serve various Malaysian and Singaporean dishes. Their main dishes are Hainanese Chicken Rice, Malaysian-style Bak Kut Teh and Curry Laksa. (I am more of a fan of the Singaporean-style Bak Kut Teh which is more peppery than herbal. But I would still happily enjoy the Malaysian-style from time to time.)

We visited on a Sunday night and it was pretty crowded at 6 pm. All the tables were taken.

We were keen to return to the restaurant because we had fond memories of their Chicken Rice and Bak Kut Teh. The menu had definitely shrunk since last time, but that’s not a bad thing when they get to focus on their best dishes.

When you order at this restaurant, you order and pay before you eat. So don’t bother waiting for a waiter to come to your table, you need to go to the counter to order first. Unfortunately it took us almost 30 minutes before our first order came to our table. It took a long time, but could be due to the restaurant being full, the restaurant still being newish and that it was so close to New Years.

We ordered their Chick Kut Teh for AUD$16.90. It was basically bak kut teh with all the usual ingredients in the soup plus egg noodles and a huge free range chicken leg. I have to admit that I don’t think bak kut teh and egg noodles worked. It is a very unusual combination. Though the soup in isolation was good. I found it a chore to eat the chicken leg, especially after waiting so long for the dish.

We also ordered the Hainan Chicken Rice and Chicken Giblets for $17.90. This was a really nice dish. It came with a satisfying amount of free range chicken and giblets. Plus the rice had a chicken fragrance to it and the soup was good. On the dining table were Garlic Chili and Ginger Sauce which you could self serve anytime.

Lastly, we had their Red Bean and Cendol Shaved Ice for $7.90. We were genuinely looking forward to this dessert. But it was hugely disappointing. It looked nothing like the advertisement, which to be fair is hard to match, but it was awful looking at it and not fun to eat. The cendol was off color and off taste. The red bean were just the can variety. We really regretted buying this dessert.

Other than dessert, the food was good. Their Chicken Rice was good as usual and if you go with their Bak Kut Teh, I would recommend going with the rice version.

Hainan Chicken is located within the Century City Walk precinct at 285-287 Springvale Road, Glen Waverley VIC 3150:
