Marameo – Melbourne – deliciously cheeky Italian pasta

The Marameo has a lot in common with the late Sarti, which closed in August 2019, but it’s more laidback across the board. The interior is trendy, modern and the menu is a slick one pager.

Marameo advertises itself as follows: “Cheeky” Italian food is rustled up at Melbourne’s Marameo, a new restaurant based on Russell Place in Melbourne CBD. Expect fine Italian food with a modern twist. The all-day dining venue is classy yet relaxed, with the onus on having a good time – especially on the cool outdoor terrace.

The name of the restaurant: Marameo comes from the Italian, “thumbing your nose”, which is usually associated with a hand gesture.

Marameo is located in Melbourne’s central business district and off Bourke Street but closer to the Little Collins Street end. Look out for the entrance by looking for the red sign against the dark exterior.

I came here for lunch and dinner on two separate days. I had the Express Lunch for $15, Spaghetti cacio e pepe, which is says on the menu is available from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm, but found out at dinner that it could be ordered during the dinner service too.

The Spaghetti cacio e pepe is simple, spaghetti, cheese and pepper sauce, but boy is it super tasty. It was simple and delicious.

For dinner, we were given some sourdough bread with some olive oil. I had the Cavatelli, pork sausage, broccoli dish ($28), while my wife had the Squid ink spaghetti, WA blue swimmer crab, chilli, tomato, fish roe dish ($33).

I really liked the Cavatelli, pork sausage, broccoli dish. The pasta looked like grubs, but had a nice texture top them. There was shaved broccoli, pieces of pork sausage anmd a delicious green broccoli puree.

The Squid ink spaghetti, WA blue swimmer crab, chilli, tomato, fish roe dish was nice, but it didn’t wow me in special way. The seafood smell was strong and I couldn’t quite pick up where the aroma was from, but it was a tasty salty smell. The dish had black colored spaghetti, which didn’t have any major change to the taste of the spaghetti.

It was a pleasant night with some delicious Italian food. The interior was pleasant and had a nice atmosphere for people wanting to catch up.
