Like Pho, Bun Bo Hue (Spicy Beef & Pork Noodle Soup or literally noodles from Hue) is a very popular Vietnamese noodle soup dish. It contains thick vermicelli, beef and pork meats. It’s a dish that has a good mix of salty, spicy and umami flavors. A good vendor will usually serve Bun Bo Hue with a delicious hot soup with good cuts of beef and pork along with fresh herbs and vegetables.
Bun Ngon used to be a small restaurant within Springvale Central Shopping Centre, but it was so popular that they decided to open an even bigger restaurant on the corner of the shopping center and expand its menu from just having noodle soups to also having stir fries and rice dishes. With these types of restaurants, you don’t come for the service. You are strictly here for the food. If you order the food, judge them based on their specialties.
Most people come to Springvale, because they want good food at an affordable price. The competition is strong in Springvale. The cost of a noodle soup dish at Bun Ngon starts around AUD$13 to $15. Their signature Bun Bo Hue is $14. Each of their famous noodle soup dishes come with an elaborate side dish of fragrant herbs and vegetables like basil, rocket, bean sprout, etc. What I tend to do is chuck the whole lot of herbs and vegetables into the noodle soup and let the heat soften them while they soak up a little of the soup.
We ordered their Bun Bo Hue and their Chicken Glass Noodle Soup for $15. The Bun Bo Hue’s soup was spicy with a bit of a zest. It was a better than typical beef and pork flavor soup. If you don’t know what you want and want to try their specialty, go for their Bun Bo Hue.
The Chicken Glass Noodle Soup had some nice free range chicken which came with the usual tougher, darker chicken meat. Free range chicken meat is actually quite nice, because the meat is much more lean (as though the chicken got more of a workout when it was free ranging in the fields). The soup had a nice chicken flavor to it, but the odd (yet welcomed) thing was seeing pigs blood jelly in the bowl.
I have always been meaning to try to Free Range Chicken with Rice for $19. It always gets ordered by others and when I see it, I usually think to myself, I should order that next time.
Springvale is my neighborhood and has been for decades so I can tell you where to visit. Bun Ngon is one of them. (I wish their service and attitude was better, because my sense is that they seem curt and I’ve eaten here more than 10 times.)
