Atlas Dining – South Yarra – incredible, affordable fine dining five course experience

It was a nice surprise to be dining at Atlas Dining at South Yarra, along Commercial Road and near Prahran Market. It was a refreshing experience that offered great food and excellent service. I was so impressed with the five course set, the theme, and just how nice, professional the waiters were. I recommend visiting Atlas Dining if you ever get the chance.

Atlas Dining changes its menu every 3 or so months. Its menu travels the world and back to Australia. I was lucky enough to try its Cuban menu, which was completely foreign to me and was truly memorable and delightful.

It’s best to book in advance for your table and they take a $50 deposit per person.

I feel it must be difficult to come up with a cuisine every few months, but it seems the folks at Atlas Dining have managed to do so with 16 cuisines. (If they run out of ideas, I think that it never hurts to resurrect successful cuisines, maybe with slight differences to entice returning guests.)

According to Atlas Dining’s webpage, it says this about the restaurant:

In case you haven’t travelled with us before, let us introduce ourselves. We are a fine dining restaurant located in the heart of South Yarra. We first opened our doors in 2016, when a then, 22-year-old Charlie Carrington, decided to create a restaurant that changed cuisine every few months. Dubbed the most “Ambitious Restaurant Opening” of the year, Atlas Dining quickly rose to cult status. Within a month, Charlie became the youngest Australian chef to be awarded a Chef’s Hat. Six years on, and (now) 16 cuisines later, Atlas Dining continues to be one of the most unique restaurants around. We offer affordable fine dining, but most importantly, an unforgettable experience that helps guests’ taste buds travel the world.

Atlas Dining

Up until 28 February 2023, the menu consists of the following five dishes for $100 per person:

  1. Snapper, Sour Orange Mojo, Almond & Gazpacho
  2. The Atlas Cubano
  3. Octopus, Corn & BBQ Guava
  4. Smoked Chicken Ropa Vieja, Avocado & Tapioca
  5. Rum & Pineapple Cake, Coconut & Caramelised Pineapple Sorbet

Unique experience at Atlas Dining

All the dishes were incredible.

I said, without seeing the menu and before eating, that it would be good if they could do the Cubano – given how iconic it is within Cuban cuisine. To my surprise, my hope came true. Lo and behold, the Atlas Cubano was the second dish to appear. This Cubano was quite different to the usual one because it didn’t have leg ham, pickled cucumber and cheese, but instead it had a delicious pork terrine, with a pickled salad and a really nice mustard sauce. The snapper and octopus were equally fantastic and exciting.

The best dish was the Smoked Chicken Ropa Vieja, in which the chicken was so tender and delicious. My wife and I commented on just how tender the meat was. It was cooked perfectly with the best spices and sauce.

The whole experience was topped off by the Rum and Pineapple Cake, which was soaked in the rum and pineapple syrup. It was super tasty and an excellent way to cap off the meal.

If you have kids, I was able to bring my two year old child and she was able to sit with us, but she had her own meal (which she preferred anyways).
