Winner Chicken – Clayton – sensational crispy, spicy boneless chicken

Along Clayton Road, you may come across a restaurant called Winner Chicken with yellow signs and awards on its window. The restaurant serves some sensational crispy, spicy boneless chicken for $4.5 per piece and manages to attract quite a number of customers along this busy street.

It could just be me, but when restaurants have so many signs and stickers saying no. 1 or just look a bit too flashy for their good, I tend to steer away from them. But on day, walking down Clayton Road, I noticed the sheer number of people coming in and out of this establishment that I decided to give it a shot. (I am sure someone walking into this establishment at one point was saying, “winner winner chicken dinner”.)

Inside, it seemed a bit quiet at first but after I ordered my meal and sat down there was a constant steam of people walking in and out. The service and its speed is pretty decent.

There is seating in the restaurant, but its cafeteria style where you order at the counter and get your own water and cutlery.

There are several options in the food warmer like grilled chicken, fried wings, etc that are ready to eat. Otherwise you can order any of the ready to cook items on the menu.

The menu, rightly, is focused on its fried chicken. There are several meals and combos to order from, but they don’t seem to offer any huge savings. For example, the Meal for Two with 1 Burger, 1 Wrap, 4 Wings, 4 Nuggets, 2 Drinks and 2 Dips for $32 is only a savings of $3.4. So I think there is no harm ordering whatever you want and you get what you want. (Plus, the menu items are decently priced.) Although chicken is the main item, they do also sell battered fish and beef burgers as well as fried rice, Japanese curry rice and Portuguese egg tarts.

What to get at Winner Chicken?

I ordered the 3 Piece Boneless Meal with chips and drink for $19. After ordering, I sat at my chosen table and eventually my meal was brought out to me. The chips were cooked well and were crispy on the outside and soft, fluffy in the middle.

The real winner was the crispy, spicy boneless chicken. Wow. It was so sensationally delicious. It’s way better than the stuff you can get at KFC or even Hot Star Chicken. It has excellent flavour, a pinch of spiciness and really good battering.
