Holy Basil – Parramatta – Laos and Thai restaurant with a gilded interior

In the heart of Parramatta, Holy Basil offers a delightful fusion of Laotian and Thai cuisine within an enchanting ambiance adorned with Buddha statues and gilded obelisks.

Stepping into Holy Basil, one is immediately struck by the exquisite interior décor—a harmonious blend of traditional Thai and Laotian elements. The serene atmosphere, punctuated by the gentle glow of dim lighting, creates an inviting space perfect for an evening of dining. For me, the look and feel of the restaurant is a real spectacle to behold, and very impressive.

Having made a reservation prior to our visit, we arrived promptly at the restaurant’s opening time of 5:30 pm, albeit after a leisurely stroll from Parramatta Station. Despite the distance, the anticipation of savouring authentic Laotian and Thai flavours spurred us forward. We had read ahead of time many Google reviews commenting on the food, the décor, and the service being above par.

Seated amidst the ornate surroundings, we embarked on a culinary journey, beginning with a refreshing Papaya Salad that tantalised the taste buds with its perfect balance of sweet, sour, and spicy notes. The vibrant colours and fresh ingredients set the stage for the gastronomic delights that followed.

Next, we indulged in the Red Duck Curry—a fragrant concoction of succulent duck simmered in a rich coconut milk-based curry, infused with aromatic spices. The tender meat was delicious and tender, while the velvety sauce enveloped each bite with warmth and depth of flavour.

Accompanying our curry was the Pineapple Fried Rice—a delightful medley of fluffy rice, juicy chunks of pineapple, and an assortment of vegetables, crowned with cashew nuts for added crunch. The sweet and savoury interplay of ingredients elevated this classic Thai dish to new heights.

While savouring our meal, we couldn’t help but notice the lively chatter of fellow diners—a testament to the restaurant’s popularity among families, friends, and colleagues alike. However, the bustling ambiance, coupled with less-than-ideal acoustics, occasionally made conversation a challenge amidst the din.

Holy Basil offers a memorable dining experience steeped in the rich culinary traditions of Laos and Thailand. From the intricately crafted décor to the tantalising array of dishes, every aspect of our visit left a lasting impression. Whether dining with loved ones or colleagues, Holy Basil promises an unforgettable gastronomic journey that transports diners to the vibrant streets of Southeast Asia, right in the heart of Parramatta.

Also, it may become much easier to reach thanks to the new light rail being constructed nearby. When we visited, this section of the light rail was still under construction but was very close to the restaurant.
