Kinokuniya – Sydney – a bookstore you want to visit

Despite the existence of e-books, bookstores selling physical books still exist and offer an exciting, almost dizzying, level of amazement with their sheer amount of titles and catchy looking covers. Kinokuniya is a well known Japanese bookstore hailing from Japan, but it seems to only have one holdout left – its sole bookstore in Sydney on the second floor of the Galeries. It’s a shame there is only one Kinokuniya left in all of Australia.

When visiting Sydney, I always make a trip to Kinokuniya just to see all the Japanese catalogue. There are always new and exciting things like Japanese art books, magazines, manga, and reference books that you can easily pick up here.

Their English catalogue is also quite impressive as well with bestsellers and many popular titles. They even have quite an extensive collection of comic book and manga.

Inside Kinokuniya

There are so many books in their wonderland

You can easily become immersed in the many books. There is something attractive about the way Kinokuniya organise and display their various books.

For families with kids, this store even has a children’s corner where you’ll be spoilt for choice on potential books for your kids or as gifts for other kids. One difficulty with Kinokuniya is families with prams or people in wheelchairs. The only way to access the store is via the elevator and taking the rear entrance to the store.

There is a café, which used to be Black Star Pastry, connected to the bookstore. It’s great to visit the café after purchasing your books. Here you can sit back with a cake and coffee or tea, while reading your new books.
