Le Charme – Glen Waverley – vibrant fresh flavours from Hong Kong with rice, noodles and desserts

Hong Kong cuisine is brimming with East meets West dishes like fried rice, bolognaise on noodles and honey chicken. Hong Kong is heavily influenced by it’s Western heritage where things like bread, tomato and cheese found their way into the cuisine. There are strong influences from French and Portuguese cuisine in things like the cheese bake dishes to the egg tart. Le Charme has a location in Melbourne’s Chinatown, but has now found a place in Glen Waverley on Kingsway. It’s a great restaurant, with an awesome menu. Le Charme offers some of the best, fresh vibrant Hong Kong style dishes in Melbourne.

The restaurant is small. It has a bakery for takeaway and the dining area for people wanting to order from the menu. The interior of the restaurant is suitably cramped and busy looking like a typical Hong Kong restaurant, no corner of the restaurant is left free. When it came to layout of the restaurant, I liked the long bench against the wall and the various mirrors.

Le Charme is situated next to Fu Cha (Bubble Tea) and Rising Embers along Kingsway. There is parking into the multistory or around the various parking lots. When we visited, we were able to get a seat without a hitch.

The service is pretty no nonsense. When we got to our table, we were given paper cups and a jug of water. The water seems to be distilled water. We ordered our meal using the QR code. And our meals came as they were prepared.

The menu itself is quite extensive with main dishes, small dishes, rice, noodles and heaps and heaps of desserts. I noticed that people were ordering the Baked Rice dishes as well as the Hong Kong Style Mango Pomelo Sago Pudding and the Whole Papaya with Sweet Milk. What I like about the menu is the vibrant colours and the fresh ingredients they use.

The dishes had fresh ingredients and were tasty

We ordered their Fresh Tomato & Beef Scrambled Eggs on Rice for $16.80, Chicken Chop Rice with Cheese and Tomato Sauce for $15.80 and Guangzhou Style Whole Prawn Wonton Soup (with Pork) for $11.80.

The Fresh Tomato & Beef Scrambled Eggs on Rice was excellent, though the sauce was a really sweet. I liked that they retained the tomato texture and made the smothered the rice in the sauce. Chicken Chop Rice with Cheese and Tomato Sauce came out super hot. The cheese was excellent to dig into. The Wonton Soup was good too, you could see the whole prawns and taste the pork, and the soup had squid flakes.

We finished up with a sponge cake for $4 from their Dessert Stand and a Bubble Waffle for $6.80. Both were alright, but nothing to shout out.
