Metartworld – Art Space – South Melbourne – metal art and starry sky exhibition

Metartworld is both a museum for metal statues, representing pop culture icons from Star Wars, Marvel, Warcraft, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Game of Thrones, and a vibrant light and illumination exhibition called Starry Sky, with fantastical exhibits almost worthy of TeamLab-level epicness.

Metartworld is located in South Melbourne. It can be reached by tram, but best by car. There is free parking on the streets. If you take tram, there is about 13 minutes of walking that you have to do to get from the tram stop to the museum.

At the museum, you can purchase your ticket at the counter or pre-purchase them through the website.

The museum consists of the main floor, with a array of metal statues, vehicles, and benches/chairs to see and experience. I came across a lot of well known pop-culture icons like Darth Vader (Star Wars), Gollum (Lord of the Rings), Thanos (Marvel), Shrek (Dreamworks Shrek), and many Orcs from Warcraft. You can take a seat on their replica Game of Thrones throne in the back corner of the museum, as well as carry their massive, heavy rifle and grenade props.

There is a kids floor on the second storey as well as the Starry Sky Exhibition. The exhibition is definitely a highlight, especially the Candy Maze, which is a room packed with mirrors and takes a bit of time to traverse. The Intergalactic Journey and 360 Tunnel were also huge highlights. Intergalactic Journey is stunning because it’s a room filled with planets hanging from the roof, while the whole room itself has mirrors on all sides – which makes for great photos! There were some attempts to do projections, similar to those you find at TeamLab Borderless or Planets exhibitions, but they were pretty mundane quality.

From their website

Welcome to Metartworld, the biggest metal art gallery in Australia, showcasing unique artworks from international artists. We have stunning metal art statues throughout our art space, each handmade from scrap metal and recycled material. The hours of crafting and polishing put into each art piece create amazing details and textures. Our space will bring back childhood memories and recapture their joy. Our art gallery is great for groups of all ages and sizes, including fans of anime, movies, animals, the military, cars, motorcycles, and princesses. Each piece is interactive; take pictures, touch, hold, sit, ride, and drive them, and you’ll create the best memories that you are sure to cherish in the future.

Our fantasy starry sky exhibition on the second floor displays a perfect combination of advanced technology with the world of light and shadows. Feel free to take as many photos as you like; every single one will feel like looking at a blockbuster movie. No matter where you start, each exhibition is perfect in its own way and will make you want to stay forever. Covering an area of 400 square meters, we have over 12+ themed exhibitions, a 360° immersive experience tunnel, and a bright and romantic 5D starry sky. Our themed spaces allow you to get the feeling of roaming freely in the universe, breathing brisk morning air whilst walking through a lush green field, wandering through the galaxy, and much more. Whatever you’re into, there’s something for everyone.

Experience both the main exhibition and the Starry Sky exhibition for $40

Tickets to Metartworld are $40 for adults or $30 for children. It’s a worthwhile experience to enjoy with friends and family. I’d definitely recommend spending some time in the Starry Sky exhibition, because it’s pretty impressive. (It would be nice if people didn’t make mess or creates puddles in parts of the exhibit, and unfortunately you will come across some dead pixels on some of the screens.)

As part of the entry price, we were also able to take part in a painting session at 3:30 pm. This is where someone comes out with a bucket of paint sets and hands a set to each child to paint some white blocks using three coloured paints.

There isn’t much in the way of food at this museum, but South Melbourne is breaming with options so you can head to the South Melbourne Market or one of the nearby cafes afterwards.
