Tickets to this event could be purchased a few months in advance for AUD$17.99 (or USD$11.99) and it came with some pre-events. Compared to the last event featuring Pokémon Red and Green, this one celebrated Pokémon Gold and Silver and promoted Pokémon’s 26th Anniversary.
This time around I felt it was difficult to fully immerse myself in this event given parental obligations and the lack of raids that I was able to do given the lack of people around, but it seems like they have streamlined a lot of features and it was nice event overall. My biggest hope is that raids will one day either tell us when there are people inside or will allow people to warp into raids where people need numbers.
This event has players select between Pokémon Gold and Silver and work to complete Special Research tasks and activities while catching all the Johto Pokémon. Selecting either Pokémon Gold or Silver changed the spawns on the day so if you choose Gold you’d have access to Spinarak, Teddiursa, Gligar and Mantine but would see Ledyba, Delibird, Skarmory or Phanpy. Here were the exclusives and the Pokémon that had increased shiny chances based on your selection:
Gold Version
Exclusive Pokémon: Spinarak, Gligar, Teddiursa, and Mantine will be attracted to Incense.
Higher Shiny Chances: Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Spinarak, Igglybuff, Natu, Hoppip, Sunkern, Misdreavus, Wobbuffet, Gligar, Shuckle, Teddiursa, Swinub, Mantine, and Ho-Oh.
Silver Version
Exclusive Pokémon: Ledyba, Delibird, Skarmory, and Phanpy will be attracted to Incense.
Higher Shiny Chances: Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Ledyba, Cleffa, Sudowoodo, Hoppip, Yanma, Pineco, Delibird, Skarmory, Houndour, Phanpy, Miltank, Larvitar, and Lugia.
Between Pokémon Gold and Silver, I thought Gold had the better selection of Pokémon. But I ended up going with Silver and choose Cyndaquil as my partner.
The spawn on the day depending on the hour of the day. Here was the rotation on the day:
9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.: New Bark Town
10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.: Violet City
11:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m.: National Park
12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.: Goldenrod City
1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.: Mt. Silver
2:00 p.m to 3:00 p.m: New Bark Town
3:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m: Violet City
4:00 p.m to 5:00 p.m: National Park
5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.: Goldenrod City
6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.: Mt. Silver
7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.: Pokémon from all previous hours
In addition, during event, Raikou, Entei and Suicune could spawn in the wild. You can encounter them but they all had a 99% chance of fleeing along with a low chance of capture. So no point trying to capture these Pokémon. The aim here was to photograph each of these legendary beats for the Timed Research challenge: “Photo Safari” and be rewarded with a chance to properly capture them and 50 candies for each legendary beast if you managed to complete the task. (Also if you used the Pokémon Go accessories, you would always miss this opportunity.)
My shiny Pokémon for the day was smaller than the Kanto Tour, which consisted of the following in their order:
- Marill
- Ledyba
- Gyarados – guaranteed from the Research Task
- Raikou – from the research task
- Miltank
The spawns, raids and Timed Research will appear for all players, regardless of if they bought a ticket. I liked that they gave plenty of Incense as rewards for completing the capture collection in each hour and they provided 3 free raid passes.
