Ba TO – Springvale South – a contemporary looking Vietnamese restaurant

Ba To is located just off Heatherton Road on Hosken Street in Springvale South, not far from Noble Park. Unlike some older Vietnamese eateries in the area, Ba To boasts a contemporary look, with stylish Wellington side chairs, modern tables, and charming paintings reflecting Vietnamese culture and traditions. The restaurant’s décor creates a welcoming yet sophisticated atmosphere, making it stand out visually among its local competitors.

HighlightsBa To offers a modern Vietnamese dining experience with stylish décor but disappoints with small portions and ordinary flavours. The dessert station looks promising.

Digital Menu Experience

Instead of a traditional menu, Ba To provides diners with a digital tablet, allowing them to browse through an Instagram-style reel of dishes, complete with images and prices. While this is a modern and interactive approach, it also meant we couldn’t quickly scan the full menu at a glance. The presentation of the food on the tablet looked appealing, setting high expectations for what was to come.

Disappointing Portions and Underwhelming Flavours

For our meal, we ordered the Beef Pho ($16) and the Thick Noodle Soup with Fried Fish Cakes ($18). We initially wanted to try the Shaking Beef on Rice, but unfortunately, it was sold out that Saturday night. When our dishes arrived, we were taken aback by the portion sizes—the bowls looked half-filled, with noticeably fewer noodles, soup, and toppings than expected.

In terms of taste, the food was quite ordinary. The pho, consisting of sliced beef, beef balls, and brisket, lacked the depth of flavour that great pho is known for. Similarly, the thick noodles with fried fish cakes were exactly as described—just thick rice noodles and fried fish cakes, without any additional ingredients or garnishes to enhance the dish. It was a disappointing experience, especially given the restaurant’s stylish setting, which led us to anticipate something more refined in flavour.

A Promising Dessert Station

One bright spot was the dessert station near the entrance, offering classic Vietnamese treats like the Three-Colour Combination Drink and other sweet beverages. While we didn’t try them on this visit, they appeared to be a highlight for customers looking for a refreshing dessert option.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Ba To delivers in terms of ambience and modern presentation, but the food itself left much to be desired. The portion sizes were small, and the dishes we tried were unremarkable in taste. While this spot might have some standout dishes we didn’t order, based on our experience, it wouldn’t be our first choice for a fulfilling Vietnamese meal.
