Hoi An Village – Springvale South – humble Vietnamese restaurant on Heatherton Road

Hoi An Village Vietnamese is tucked away in the Springvale Plaza Shopping Centre, an easy-to-miss spot along Heatherton Road. The restaurant is hidden behind an Aldi and sits beside a Cambodian eatery. On entering, the venue gives off a humble, dated vibe that feels slightly dingy and uninviting. While the atmosphere may not appeal to everyone, I personally don’t mind modest surroundings if the food impresses. Unfortunately, during our visit on a hot Sunday evening, the lack of adequate cooling became an issue, with several patrons visibly sweating—a detail that detracted from the overall experience.

A Popular Spot for Families
Despite its understated appearance, the restaurant had a steady stream of patrons, primarily families sharing larger meals. We observed tables laden with big bowls of soup and plates of food designed for communal dining, a comforting sight that speaks to its appeal as a family-friendly dining option.

Menu and Pricing
Hoi An Village’s menu features a range of classic Vietnamese dishes, but the pricing was unexpectedly higher than what you’d find at restaurants in Springvale central. This was a bit disappointing, as the food didn’t deliver the quality one might expect for the elevated prices.

What We Ordered

We tried two dishes: the Pho with beef, brisket, and beef balls ($18) and the Fried Rice Noodles with a combination of meats ($23).

  • Pho with Beef, Brisket, and Beef Balls
The pho was fine but unremarkable. While the beef brisket and sliced beef were tender, the broth lacked depth and complexity—the kind of rich, aromatic flavour that makes a great bowl of pho unforgettable. It felt like something I could easily replicate at home, which diminishes the value of dining out.
  • Fried Rice Noodles with Combination
The fried rice noodles offered a better balance of flavours, with a mix of calamari, prawns, chicken, and pork under a savoury gravy. However, the dish included oversized baby corn, which felt out of place and detracted from the otherwise decent execution.

Final Thoughts

Hoi An Village Vietnamese is a modest local option for Vietnamese cuisine, but it doesn’t compete with the quality or value found in Springvale central. While it offers convenience for those nearby and has its share of loyal patrons, the higher prices and average food quality make it difficult to recommend over the more refined and budget-friendly options just a short drive away.
