BYD Atto 3 vs Tesla Model 3 – a Hands-On Comparison
It might seem like an apples-to-oranges comparison—pitting the small-SUV BYD Atto 3 against the sedan-style Tesla Model 3—but having had the opportunity to experience both, I was able to get a sense of what each offers, and where they excel or fall short.
| Highlights | Tesla Model 3 wins on drive quality, storage, and design, while BYD Atto 3 offers affordability, practicality, and features like a 360 camera. |
Price Point: BYD Takes the Lead
Let’s start with price. The BYD Atto 3 Premium lands at around $44,990 in 2025, while the Tesla Model 3 is about $54,000. The Model Y, a closer SUV comparison, is even higher at $58,000. From a value standpoint, BYD clearly takes the lead on affordability, making it more accessible to many buyers.
Driving Feel and Ride Comfort
The Model 3 outshines the Atto 3 when it comes to the driving experience. It’s smoother, more refined, and easier to control at low speeds, giving me that “chauffeur” feel where every acceleration and deceleration was seamless. In contrast, the Atto 3 felt a bit rugged, with a less polished ride that’s more typical of a budget-friendly SUV.
Interior Design and Usability
Tesla’s minimalist approach initially put me off—I assumed it’d be too barebones—but over time, I appreciated its simplicity. The wooden trim running across the dashboard, combined with the large center screen, gives the Model 3 a premium look. It’s easy on the eyes, even if it’s light on physical buttons. Everything, from climate control to media, is handled via the screen or voice commands—something that’s a double-edged sword. I found controlling wipers and demisters through the screen annoying and distracting, especially while driving.
The Atto 3, on the other hand, feels more traditional, with a neat 360-degree camera that gives you an actual image of the surroundings—a feature I found invaluable, especially in tight parking spots. Tesla’s substitute—avatars and blocks on the screen—felt more futuristic but less intuitive for me.
Storage Space: Tesla Wins Big
The Model 3’s storage is superior, thanks to its clever use of space—a front trunk (frunk), two glove boxes, and a deep boot. It easily swallowed our pram and other gear, something the Atto 3 struggled with despite being an SUV.

Comfort and Space
Though the Model 3 is wider and roomier for passengers, it lacks the vertical space of an SUV. That might be a consideration for families needing extra headroom. The Model 3’s glass roof is a beautiful feature, but it’s fixed—you can’t open or close it—while the Atto 3’s glass roof has a cover for those wanting a more adjustable experience.
Infotainment and Tech
This was a real mixed bag. The Atto 3 comes standard with both FM and digital radio—no subscriptions required. The Model 3? It leans heavily on its Tesla InTune, which requires either a subscription or your phone’s hotspot to get digital radio. Android Auto also isn’t standard in the Tesla, requiring a separate download. On the other hand, Tesla’s voice commands were useful—if not perfect—and the car’s security features, like Sentry Mode recording suspicious activity, added an extra layer of safety I appreciated.
Keys, Apps, and Anti-Theft
Tesla’s key card felt futuristic, but it only worked on the driver’s side. Both cars can be unlocked via their apps, which is handy. Tesla’s security features gave it a small edge, but BYD counters with a vehicle-positioning tool in its app.
Range and Efficiency
I didn’t get enough time with either to properly assess their real-world range, but both seemed to drain power at comparable rates.
Conclusion: A Balanced Perspective
While the Tesla Model 3 might not be an SUV, it consistently impressed with its smooth drive, better storage, minimalist-yet-premium interior, and advanced tech. Its drawbacks—lack of standard radio, a sometimes cumbersome screen interface—are balanced by strong performance and safety features.
The BYD Atto 3 holds its own by offering a more traditional driving experience, unbeatable value, excellent camera features, and easier-to-use tech for everyday drivers. It’s more practical for those who prioritize functionality and affordability over cutting-edge minimalism.
In short: the Tesla Model 3 is a refined and desirable EV that justifies its price premium, but the BYD Atto 3 is a fantastic budget-friendly alternative that doesn’t skimp on features.
