The myriad of restaurants in Glen Waverley can make any newcomer dizzy. It’s become a real mecca for top restaurants, so much so that even big brand names establish their foothold in Glen Waverley before branching into other Melbourne suburbs, including the central business district itself. For example, Haidilao Hot Pot and Boiling Crab. BBQ-K is another franchise that has a presence, though it’s off on a side street. If you can spot the tall Panda Hot Pot building, you can find BBQ-K at its base. On arrival, you will be greeted to their menu outside, which is great but all the prices are outdated by a few dollars.

Making a reservation is absolutely essential if you want a table on Friday or Saturday. On public holidays, they add on a whooping 15% to the final bill.
On walking in, I immediately found myself thinking “gosh there are a lot of people here” on a Saturday evening. Every table taken and people having at the barbecue! I noticed that the servers are quick to turn off the barbecue stoves as soon as people finish cooking, possibly due to the cost of running the contraptions.
The menu was pretty straight forward. There were some set menu choices, which seemed cheaper than buying individual meat portions, e.g. like their Pork Set for $68 or their Wagyu Set for $108. The set menu comes with purple rice, Korean sides and a choice of soup or salad. We opted for their Angus Set for $98 which comes with oyster steak, marbled spare ribs and scotch fillet. We added their Japchae with beef for $19 and a half portion of Korean Fried Chicken (boneless) with honey mustard sauce for $19.
The servers bring the scorching hot charcoal to the table. It’s so hot that it would make for a great sit around option during winter.
The whole affair requires you to cook your own meat to your desired texture. If you don’t cook it yourself, the servers will come along and help you. I noticed that some customers were helped out more than others if they failed to pay attention to their extra well done meat. (In a way, that’s great customer service.)
Out of the Angus Set, I thought the spare ribs and the scotch fillet were great, whereas the oyster steak was a bit boring.
Enjoy the Korean barbecue experience!
I liked that each of the plates come with sauces and salt and pepper and you can put your stuff in the middle of it.
Having visited the My Mom’s Kitchen all you can eat for $48.50 per adult and having paid about $140 here at BBQ-K for three people, I think you can more bang for your buck at My Mom’s Kitchen (click the link to read more) because you can choose whatever meat you want and the variety is fantastic.
