Caldermeade Farm and Cafe – Caldermeade – free entry with farm animals and playground

Caldermeade Farm and Cafe is located 80 kms from Melbourne’s central business district. It offers free entry to all which makes it a great destination for family with kids. There is a large shed for visitors to view their cow’s being milked at 2:30 pm. It’s quite a fascinating session because the farm have turned it into a well-oiled process.

It’s a long drive from any part of Melbourne to Caldermeade Farm and Cafe. Fortunately there are some 100 km roads and it is mostly highway, but there are a lot of roundabouts. During our visit there were even some road closures and one lane roads, so it’s best to check news on roadworks before making your way down.

On arrival, there seems to be sufficient parking. You’ll no doubt come across the large shed with the name Caldermeade Farm and Cafe printed on its south side facing the car park.

The café is relatively modern with lots of tables and chairs as well as still feeling spacious and open. The café offers a bunch of dishes that seem to be quite popular with guests such as their large-ish chicken schnitzel. Other popular items from the café menu are the milkshakes and their popular scones. There is also an ice-cream parlour, but we didn’t find the ice-cream to be anything special – at least its there for those hot days.

On the other side of the café is the open area with a dated, but still decent play ground, some animals behind fences and a large lake. There isn’t much to do in this area, but it’s a decent area to walk around. They try to spice it up with a large cow statue, tractors and seemingly other knickknacks for photos.

At the right time you can visit the shed to see the cows parade in to be milked. It seems to be a well oiled process and is quite impressive.
