Dragon Ball DAIMA – 13 October 2023 – a new web series anime on Crunchyroll

A new trailer for the next addition to the Dragon Ball drops, Dragon Ball DAIMA. DAIMA could mean “big” or “great”. It’s not quite the return of Dragon Ball Super as many fans hoped.

As the trailer for Dragon Ball DAIMA unfolds, fans are taken on an exhilarating journey through the rich history of the Dragon Ball anime. From the original Dragon Ball in the 1980s to the latest installment, Dragon Ball Super in 2022, and even the divisive Dragon Ball GT, this anime promises to pay homage to four decades of iconic adventures.

Set to grace screens in the Fall of 2024, Dragon Ball DAIMA immediately piques interest with its intriguing premise. The summoning of Shenron, granting a wish to presumably transform the beloved cast into children, sets the stage for a fresh take on familiar faces. Witnessing Goku, Vegeta, and the entire crew in pint-sized form is both endearing and perplexing, especially when juxtaposed with the inexplicable transformation of the younger characters into adorable infants.

Celebrating the show’s 40th anniversary, Dragon Ball DAIMA brings forth a nostalgic wave of emotions. Characters like Mr. Satan, Krillin, Chi Chi, Bulma, and Android 18, among others, return in their miniaturised glory. It’s odd that even Goten and Trunks are here, but as babies.

The intriguing twist of Goku and Supreme Kai embarking on a spacefaring adventure adds a new dimension to the narrative, while the sight of Goku wielding his trusty bo staff is a nod to his roots.

The trailer also provides a tantalising glimpse into pivotal moments, such as Babidi and Buu’s clash with Gohan, Dabura, and Supreme Kai during the Majin Buu saga, adding a sense of familiarity, yet mystery. The inclusion of this event raises questions about the timeline, hinting that the childlike transformations may have occurred around the time of Beerus and Whis’ anticipated visit during the Battle of Gods saga.

Fans with a keen memory will recall a similar transformation in Dragon Ball GT, where Goku was turned into a child using the Black Star Dragon Balls. While this attempt aimed to recapture the adventurous spirit of the original Dragon Ball, it didn’t quite resonate with fans accustomed to the intense battles of Dragon Ball Z. Dragon Ball DAIMA’s approach, however, holds promise for a more balanced fusion of nostalgia and action.

The decision to release Dragon Ball DAIMA as a web series exclusively on Crunchyroll is interesting. This streaming platform has been a haven for anime enthusiasts, and its partnership with this much-anticipated series suggests that Crunchyroll is keen to have exclusive content.

Check out the trailer below:

Dragon Ball DAIMA ventures into uncharted territory, transforming beloved characters into adorable, pint-sized versions of themselves. While the premise is undeniably a bold rehash, it remains to be seen how the series will handle elements like pacing, art, animation, and power scaling, especially in light of Dragon Ball GT’s mixed reception. As the Fall of 2024 approaches, anticipation runs high for what promises to be a memorable addition to the Dragon Ball legacy.
