Gac Bep – Springvale – Hoi An Chicken Rice and Banh Cuon

Gac Bep on Buckingham Avenue in Springvale is a newer Vietnamese restaurant focused on chicken rice and banh cuon. Hoi An Chicken Rice is different to normal chicken rice with the chicken mixed in with a Vietnamese salad. Banh cuon is steamed rice noodles filled with either minced pork, prawns, and/or a bevy of tasty morsels. We walked into this restaurant without reading a review or knowing anything about it. It was new and we wanted to give it a try.

We visited Gac Bep without a reservation. The hosts were able to assist us with a table and a high chair for our toddler. We were pretty intrigue by the menu given the restaurant focused on dishes other than standard Broken Rice and Pho. Here there is a real emphasis on the Chicken Rice with shredded chicken and salad along with turmeric rice. The other is their mixture of meatloaf and dried prawn and pork with banh cuon (steamed rice rolled noodles).

The menu also had some interesting dishes like Met Bun Dau Long for $20 (which was a mix of meats and vermicelli), fermented fish noodle soup for $18, and pork blood congee for $8.

We opted for the Hoi An Chicken Rice with Shredded Chicken for $16 and their Stir Fried Sliced Beef Pho for $17. The Chicken Rice was their star dish. It came with their sauce and a bowl of soup. The chicken was tender and tasty and went very well with their Vietnamese salad. It’s highly recommend ordering this dish if you visit.

The other dish, their Stir Fried Sliced Beef Pho for $17, was also nice. But I think places like Pho Thin do theirs better than here. The beef was nicely cooked and the soup was delicious and only slightly oily.

We also enjoyed their jasmine tea while having their dishes.
