Beachcomber Cafe and Beach Bar – St Kilda – beachside cafe

Beachcomber Cafe and Beach Bar is located in the heart of St Kilda, nestled within the same building as popular dining spots like Republica and Captain Baxter. Its prime position offers stunning views of St Kilda Beach, making it a popular choice for both locals and tourists looking to enjoy a meal with a seaside backdrop.

While the location is certainly a draw, the accessibility and convenience of getting there pose some challenges. The venue offers onsite paid parking, but visitors should be prepared for higher-than-average parking fees. Free parking is an option, but finding a suitable spot can be difficult, and deciphering the complex parking signage—such as Permit Areas 25 or 21—can be confusing. Many of these signs indicate that time restrictions only apply to those without a permit, but this isn’t immediately clear.

For those willing to walk, free street parking can be found in the residential areas nearby, but expect a bit of a trek across several roads before reaching the cafe. Had we known about the onsite parking beforehand, we would have opted for the convenience.

Dining Experience

Beachcomber operates as both a takeaway café and a sit-down restaurant. The indoor and outdoor seating areas are spacious, making it a good option for groups, families with prams, and those looking for a relaxed beachfront meal. The restaurant has a QR code ordering system at each table, allowing diners to browse the menu and place their orders digitally. While this system is convenient, we encountered a minor issue—our order exceeded $100, which triggered additional authentication from our card issuer. This extra step delayed our food order as we initially thought it had gone through, only to realise later that it hadn’t been processed.

One notable downside was the hidden surcharges—the menu prices didn’t include weekend or card payment surcharges, which added to the already premium pricing of the café. Given its beachfront location and tourist-heavy setting, these extra costs weren’t entirely surprising but were still frustrating.

There also seems to be a steady stream of breachgoers coming for ice-cream and also small treats from their café section.

Food & Pricing

Beachcomber’s menu offers a variety of dishes, ranging from seafood to traditional café-style meals. We opted for:

  • Lemon Pepper Calamari and Chips – $37
  • Kids Parma and Chips – $15 (which included a choice of apple or orange juice)
  • Steak and Lobster Roll (ordered by our companions)

The food was well-prepared and tasted fresh, though the prices felt steep for what was offered. The calamari was tender with a decent seasoning, and the chips were well-cooked, though nothing particularly extraordinary. The Kids Parma was reasonably priced, and having a drink included was a nice touch. The steak and lobster roll received positive feedback from our dining companions, but again, the value for money felt questionable.

Service was friendly but slightly slow, which could be attributed to the busy weekend crowd. Given the beachfront setting, this was somewhat expected, but it’s worth noting if you’re in a hurry.

Suitability for Families & Overall Atmosphere

While Beachcomber has a family-friendly setup with ample space for prams, the overall environment may not be the most ideal for young children, especially on busy weekends. The combination of high costs, surcharges, and St Kilda Beach’s notorious fly problem made it a less-than-relaxing experience for us.

St Kilda Beach itself has a reputation for being heavily populated with flies, which significantly impacted our dining experience. More time was spent swatting away insects than truly enjoying the food and ambiance. While this isn’t necessarily the café’s fault, it does affect the overall appeal of the location.

Final Thoughts

Pros:

✔️ Prime beachfront location with great views
✔️ Spacious seating and pram-friendly setup
✔️ QR code ordering for convenience
✔️ Decent food quality

Cons:

❌ Expensive menu with hidden surcharges
❌ Difficult parking and confusing signage
❌ Slower service during peak hours
❌ St Kilda Beach’s fly problem can be a major distraction

Would we return? Possibly, but only if we happened to be in the area and were prepared for the costs. While Beachcomber Cafe and Beach Bar is a decent option for those looking to dine by the beach, it’s not the most budget-friendly or stress-free experience, especially when factoring in parking difficulties and environmental nuisances. If you’re simply after a casual meal without the hefty price tag, there are better alternatives elsewhere in Melbourne.
