Le Feu – Springvale – pho hot pot

Le Feu Springvale is a Vietnamese hot pot restaurant along Springvale Road. Le Feu means the fire in French. Le Feu has two locations on the same street, the difference is the halal restaurant and the non-halal restaurant. I visited the non-halal restaurant because I don’t mind pork and my dietaries aren’t limited. The non-halal restaurant is more cozier and is the smaller of the two restaurants, plus is further away to Springvale Train Station.

Le Feu is an interesting name for a Vietnamese restaurant. Vietnam was part of Indochina and occupied by the French. Though I didn’t spot many French dishes, just the many Vietnamese dishes and cuisine inspired and often done better by the Vietnamese.

What makes Le Feu interesting is the fact that it serves pho and many other Vietnamese noodles in a hot pot style. This is where you get a large hot pot with the delicious pho broth, and serve yourself. The pho option is $68 and looks to be able to satisfy four people. I noticed quite a few guests ordering it, and it was quite obvious the large pot and gas burner on their tables.

Of course, you can also order just standard bowls of pho and other Vietnamese noodle soups or dishes. For example, they offer the following Vietnamese noodle soups: Bun Bo Hue, Banh Canh and Bun Rieu. Plus a bunch of main dishes and salads.

Getting to the restaurant is relatively straight forward with the option of either train or car. If you come by car, there is generally ample free parking along Springvale Road and the side streets.

We were able to visit and secure a table without a prior reservation on a Saturday night. It was a bit tricky with our large double pram, but it managed somehow.

The double-sided menu, laminated, was already on the table. Along with various condiments, like hoisin and sriracha, and jasmine tea.

We ordered their Combination Pho for $17.90 and Crab Udon Noodle for $17.90. The Combination Pho also came with a plate of basil, chili, bean shoots, and a lemon wedge. The Pho came with an assortment of sliced beef including brisket and rare beef, plus beef balls. The soup and the toppings were alright, but places like Hung Vuong do both way better. The saving grace was the slightly larger bowl with more soup.

The Crab Udon Noodle on the other hand was a standout. It came with a crispy soft-shell crab, a soft-bone pork, and mushrooms. This bowl was also topped with a crab flavoured soup. It was nice, especially for $17.90. I have tried another restaurant’s version, but that Yip Restaurant – which is no longer around – did it better and was $20+.

At the register, I was surprised that they gave me a small discount for the Combination Pho from $17.90 to $13.90. This was a pleasant and welcome surprise.
