Omnia South Yarra occupies a prime position on the corner of Toorak Road and Chapel Street, an address that already signals a certain level of expectation. This part of South Yarra is synonymous with fashion, dining, and high end living, and Omnia fits comfortably into that ecosystem. Located on the ground floor of the Capitol Grand development, the restaurant feels purpose built for refined dining rather than retrofitted into an existing space, which makes a noticeable difference from the moment you arrive.
Walking up from Chapel Street, Omnia presents itself as a confident fine dining venue without appearing intimidating. The glass frontage offers a clear view inside, creating a sense of openness while still maintaining exclusivity. This is not a casual walk in venue, reservations are strongly recommended, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights, and the pricing firmly places Omnia in the premium dining category.

One of Omnia’s strongest features is its interior design. The venue is visually striking, with high ceilings, floor to ceiling glass windows, and an abundance of natural light during the day that transitions into a warm, atmospheric glow in the evening. The conservatory style glass ceiling gives the space an airy, European bistro feel, while the furniture and décor lean heavily into luxury without feeling overdone.
Every element of the fit out feels deliberate. The chairs are comfortable and substantial, the tables are generously spaced, and the finishes reflect a commitment to quality rather than trend chasing. It is opulent, but not cold, elegant, but not stiff. On a busy Friday night, the room hums with energy while still allowing for conversation without strain.
We were seated by the window overlooking Chapel Street, which added another layer to the experience. Watching the street life unfold outside while enjoying a carefully paced meal inside reinforces the sense that Omnia is very much part of South Yarra’s social fabric.

Concept and Culinary Philosophy
According to Omnia’s own description, the restaurant positions itself as a place where European bistro charm meets Australia’s finest seasonal produce. This is not marketing fluff. The menu and execution consistently reflect this philosophy.
Omnia places strong emphasis on its relationships with Australian growers and producers, and these partnerships are clearly communicated both online and through the menu. Suppliers such as Jones Potatoes from Warragul, Blackmore Wagyu, Jonella Farm asparagus, and small scale fruit producers are highlighted, which adds credibility and narrative depth to the dining experience.
The kitchen is led by award winning Culinary Director Stephen Nairn and Head Chef Evin Doherty, and the influence of classic European technique is evident throughout. Rather than pushing experimental or overly modern dishes, Omnia focuses on refinement, balance, and precision. These are bistro favourites elevated through exceptional produce and disciplined execution.
Seasonal Menus and Midday Dining
Seasonality is central to Omnia’s offering. The menu changes to reflect what is locally grown, reared, caught, and sustainably farmed, and this approach carries through from starters to desserts. House made stocks, sauces, freshly baked bread, and in house dry aged meats reinforce the sense that Omnia takes its craft seriously.
It is also worth noting that Omnia is not solely an evening destination. The restaurant offers midday dining from Thursday to Saturday, with the option to dine à la carte or select a curated two or three course set menu starting at $49 per person. In an area where lunch pricing can often rival dinner, this makes Omnia surprisingly accessible for a high quality long lunch, business meeting, or special daytime occasion.
Service and Hospitality
Service at Omnia is polished, professional, and knowledgeable. From the outset, our menu was explained clearly, including recommendations and highlights, without feeling scripted or rushed. Water glasses were consistently topped up, and courses were delivered together, which is a small detail but one that speaks to good communication between front and back of house.
The only minor shortcoming on the service side came at the end of the meal, where it was slightly difficult to attract attention when we were ready to pay the bill. This did not detract significantly from the overall experience, but it was noticeable, particularly given how attentive the service had been throughout the evening.
Overall, the service strikes the right balance between formality and warmth. Staff are clearly well trained, but still approachable, which is essential in a venue that aims to be both a neighbourhood bistro and a fine dining destination.
Bread and Starters
We began the meal with the sundried tomato and garlic sourdough with cultured butter, priced at $10. It arrived warm, crunchy on the outside, soft within, and cut into four generous slices. The flavour was rich without being overpowering, and the cultured butter was genuinely excellent, creamy, slightly tangy, and deeply satisfying.
This is one of those dishes that seems simple on paper but is executed so well that it becomes memorable. It would be very easy to overlook bread as an afterthought, but at Omnia it sets the tone for what follows. Given the quality, it would be hard not to order this again on a return visit.
Main Courses and Sides
For the main, I opted for the David Blackmore MB9+ bavette, priced at $74. This is a premium cut from one of Australia’s most respected wagyu producers, and it is treated with the respect it deserves. The steak arrived pre sliced, cooked medium rare, and presented beautifully.

The texture was exceptional, genuinely melt in the mouth, with a depth of flavour that did not require heavy sauces or embellishment. This is the kind of steak that demonstrates why provenance matters, and why Blackmore Wagyu has the reputation it does.
We ordered a full selection of sides to accompany the mains, which allowed us to experience a broader cross section of the menu.
The Blue Moon potato rosti with shallot, chive, and sour cream, priced at $16, was the standout. Crisp on the outside, soft and richly flavoured inside, it was indulgent without being greasy. This is a side dish that could easily be ordered again on its own merit.
The hand cut chips with preserved lemon aioli, also $16, were the weakest of the sides, though that is relative rather than absolute. They were perfectly acceptable, but in comparison to the rosti and vegetables, they did not leave as strong an impression.

The witlof and cos salad with Grand Marnier vinaigrette was fresh, balanced, and thoughtfully composed. The bitterness of the witlof was handled well, and the vinaigrette added complexity without overwhelming the greens.

The green beans with mustard dressing, priced at $18, were excellent. Perfectly cooked, vibrant, and well seasoned, they complemented the richness of the steak and rosti beautifully.
Taken together, the sides reinforced Omnia’s ability to elevate even familiar dishes through technique and attention to detail.
Desserts and Finish
To finish, I ordered the liquid centre cheesecake with cassis sorbet for $19. While described as a cheesecake, the texture was closer to a crème brûlée, soft, creamy, and indulgent, with the cassis sorbet providing acidity and contrast.
It was an excellent conclusion to the meal, rich but not cloying, and thoughtfully balanced. As with much of the menu, it felt refined rather than showy, which aligns perfectly with Omnia’s overall approach.

Wine and Beverage Program
While we did not explore the wine list extensively on this visit, it deserves mention. Omnia offers an extensive and carefully curated selection of wines from Australia and abroad, with a particularly enticing collection of Champagnes. The list is clearly designed to complement the menu rather than overshadow it, and staff are well positioned to offer guidance based on preference and pairing.
For diners who place importance on wine as part of the overall experience, Omnia is well equipped to deliver.
Overall Impression and Value
Omnia South Yarra delivers a genuinely high quality fine dining experience that feels appropriate for its location and price point. The food is consistently excellent, the produce is exceptional, and the execution is precise without feeling pretentious.
This is not an inexpensive restaurant, and it does not pretend to be. However, when viewed through the lens of quality, service, and overall experience, the pricing feels justified. From the ambience and service to the food itself, Omnia offers a cohesive and polished dining experience that stands out in a crowded Melbourne restaurant scene.
It is equally suited to special occasions, long lunches, business dinners, or simply an indulgent night out for those who appreciate refined European bistro style dining done well.

Omnia South Yarra is a worthy fine dining destination that delivers on its promise of culinary classics reimagined through Australia’s best seasonal produce.
