Since its establishment in 2009, Hardware Societe has left an indelible mark on the culinary scene, expanding its presence to Paris in 2016 and Barcelona in 2022. With two locations in Melbourne—one on the iconic Hardware Lane (and its initial home) and the other on Katherine Place—this French-style café has become a beloved destination for all-day breakfast and brunch enthusiasts.
The Katherine Place venue stands out for its larger and more spacious layout, offering a welcoming ambiance with ample tables and better lighting. This location provides a comfortable setting that enhances the overall dining experience. It’s also its flagship restaurant.

Renowned for its French-style offerings, Hardware Societe has gained a reputation for its diverse menu featuring all-day breakfast and brunch options. A common theme throughout the menu is the prevalence of eggs and bread, showcasing the café’s commitment to classic breakfast staples.
In its heyday, the Hardware Lane store was a bustling hub, attracting a devoted following evidenced by the queues of eager patrons waiting for a chance to savor the delectable offerings. This popularity speaks volumes about the quality and appeal of Hardware Societe’s cuisine.
The menu at Hardware Societe boasts an array of excellent dishes, making it a challenge to choose just one. A recommended approach is to pair a dish with a beverage, allowing patrons to fully immerse themselves in the café’s culinary delights.
During my visit, I opted for the Trout Timbale priced at $28. This exquisite dish featured trout cubes, herbed lime crème, salted cucumber, pickled cucumber and radish, croutons, and poached eggs. The harmonious blend of tangy and salty flavours made each bite a delightful experience, leaving a lasting impression.
To complement the meal, I indulged in the white hot chocolate drink with lychee, rose, and ganache, priced at $9. Served in two parts—an elegant mug with a generous piece of white chocolate and another with hot milk adorned with rose petals—this drink was a comforting delight. The combination of lychee, rose, and ganache created a unique and indulgent flavour profile, making it a standout choice for those seeking a comforting and distinctive beverage.
Hardware Societe is a culinary gem that continues to captivate patrons with its French-style offerings and inviting atmosphere. The expansion to international locations is a testament to the café’s enduring appeal. Whether you opt for the classic Hardware Lane store or the more spacious Katherine Place venue, the commitment to excellence in both ambiance and cuisine remains unwavering. My experience with the Trout Timbale and the white hot chocolate drink was nothing short of exceptional, affirming Hardware Societe’s status as a must-visit destination for a delightful and memorable breakfast or brunch in Melbourne.
