The problem with this fest was that they jacked up the price of the ticket from AUD$7.99 to $22.99 and from social media, it seems the shiny hunters and event goers were all-around disappointed in their catchments and rewards. In end, did I think it worth it?
It is great to have annual game event to look forward to where friends and family come together in a common desire to capture new Pokemon, whether we missed them the first time around or introduced for the first time exclusively for during event. For Australians, it was nice to be able to access to regional exclusives Torkoal and Tropius for the first time and a new Pikachu with Gracidea flowers. Both Torkoal and Tropius, being, regional exclusives, were part of my wish list for this year’s event, so I was pretty happy to finally capture them in Australia.
Pokémon Go Gest 2022 seems to be more expensive, yet more muted than the previous two years (when the fest became a global affair due to the pandemic). Although I took part in the whole day, I wasn’t too thrilled by the gifts and potential rewards handed out to event goers. The event did cater for more types of players by giving them options during the Special Research events, but other than being rewarded a Shaymin – the rest of the rewards were meh at best.
For Day 1 of the Pokémon Go Gest 2022, which had a higher shinier rate, I managed to capture 4 shiny Pokémon throughout the course of the day, while on Day 2, I only managed to capture just 1 Pokémon. This number of shinies happened to be a lot less than the number I captured last year. In order, I captured the following shiny Pokémon:
- Shelmet
- Karrablast
- Shroomish
- Buizel
- Galarian Darumaka
Overall it seems that people all over social media were generally disappointed in their captures on the day. My wife only managed to capture a total of 3 shinies for the whole two days, just Buizel, Pikachu with the Gracidea flowers, and Magnemite. For me, I felt a bit deflated not seeing much having decided to set the weekend aside to partake in this event.
Whether you had a ticket or not, all Trainers had access to the following perks:
- Trainer snapshots featured in the “Today View” in the actual game app. Players could share their snapshots using #PokemonGOFest2022 for a chance to see them featured during the event.
- A Pikachu wearing a special Shaymin-inspired Gracidea flower costume made its Pokémon GO debut in the wild and in one-star raids, which if you were lucky had a shiny chance.
- Axew appeared in one-star raids on both Saturday and Sunday, which also had a shiny chance.
- There was a chance that when taking a snapshot during event hours a Pikachu with a Gracidea flower would photobomb the photo and spawn.
On Day 1 and Day 2, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm local time, the festival rotated two times between the following four habitats:
- The City habitat featured Pokémon such as Magnemite, Alolan Grimer, Litten, Galarian Weezing, and more.
- The Plains habitat featured Pokémon such as Girafarig, Numel, Buizel, Shelmet, Torkoal, and more.
- The Rainforest habitat featured Pokémon such as Shroomish, Slakoth, Binacle, Pancham, Tropius and more.
- The Tundra habitat featured Pokémon such as Omanyte, Meditite, Darumanka, Popplio, Galarian Mr Mime and more.
Also during both days, several new shiny Unowns (G, O, U, B) made their Pokémon GO debut during the fest. (New shinies for this event were Shroomish, Numel, Karrablast, Shelmet and Axew.
On Day 2, there were raids featuring wormholes popped up all over and players had the chance to capture the Ultra Beast, Nihilego. As a ticket holder, on Day 2, we were given three Remote Raid Passes via the Shop. (Again, this was a little disappointing…)
Also, for both days:
- There were increased chance to get a shiny from using an Incense (but apparently the rate was less than Community Day encounter chances.)
- Spinning Photo Discs at Gyms earnt up to nine Raid Passes.
- There were special event stickers from Gifts and PokéStops.
Before the Pokémon Go Fest 2022, I admit that it snuck up on me. I was thrilled to see some regional exclusives being made available, but like most people I was really disappointed in the event overall. I wished there were easier ways to raid with people when you aren’t based in a city and just more interesting things happening, plus decent rewards. Although there will be a special one-day finale event to be held on Saturday, 27 August 2022, I am already have thoughts about whether I take part in next year’s event.
