TamJai Mixian – Melbourne – Swanston Street’s outlet for this Hong Kong noodle establishment
Situated on Swanston Street, TamJai Mixian has been drawing long queues since its opening in late 2024. This popular chain from Hong Kong has made its mark with several locations in Melbourne’s CBD. The interior design is simple and functional, reminiscent of Hong Kong’s bustling Kowloon noodle shops. Upon entry, patrons are greeted with QR codes on each table for ordering and a self-service water station offering hot and cold options. The condiments are minimal, with only fresh chili and soy sauce available.

Ordering and Menu Options
I decided to explore their Signature Charred Pepper Soup with Pork Belly slices and black fungus, priced at $16.90. This dish promised a peppery and spicy soup as its standout feature. Alongside it, I tried the TuFei Chicken Wings for $8.90.

Dining Experience
The Signature Charred Pepper Soup evoked nostalgia, reminiscent of Hong Kong noodle shops where diners quickly select their dishes, receive a ticket, and are served steaming bowls of noodle soup. However, the portion was modest, offering just two toppings alongside noodles and soup. While the soup’s peppery flavour hinted at its reputation, it didn’t exceed expectations compared to similar options elsewhere.
The TuFei Chicken Wings, though flavourful, were small and somewhat underwhelming. They were enjoyable but lacked the wow factor to justify their price tag.
Value for Money
While the meal wasn’t overly expensive, the portion sizes and overall experience didn’t align with the higher pricing. For $16.90, I had hoped for a more robust offering or something truly unique to distinguish the soup from its competitors and more toppings.

Hong Kong Noodle Soup House delivers an authentic Hong Kong-style noodle experience, but its offerings fall short of the hype. While the flavours are decent and the ambiance adds to its charm, the value for money leaves something to be desired. It’s worth trying once to see what the buzz is about, but it may not leave a lasting impression for repeat visits.
