Disney Wonder Cruise – Melbourne to Hobart – a first time at sea with Disney
Taking a family on a cruise for the first time is a leap of faith. You surrender the familiar comfort of land, step onto what is essentially a floating hotel with thousands of strangers, and hope that the experience is memorable for the right reasons. For my family, which includes my wife and our two young kids, the decision to board the Disney Wonder for its four night round trip from Melbourne to Hobart became one of the most exciting choices we made in 2025.
We had never cruised before. Cruising had always been one of those things that sat at the edges of our travel plans. It floated somewhere between an overhyped holiday concept and something only seasoned travellers did once they had exhausted regular holidays. But this particular cruise, a relatively short voyage on a ship designed around families, seemed like the perfect entry point. Disney had a reputation for doing things at a premium level, and that pedigree offered a sense of reassurance for two parents travelling with a five year old and a toddler.

In the weeks leading up to the trip, we watched videos, read reviews, and had countless conversations about what to expect. Would we get seasick. Would the kids be overwhelmed. Would the rooms feel claustrophobic. Would we enjoy being essentially confined to a ship for several days. All reasonable concerns for first time cruisers. But in the spirit of adventure we pushed aside those doubts and boarded the ship one bright November afternoon.
From the moment we walked through the atrium and saw the high ceilings, gold embellishments, smiling crew members, and children pointing excitedly at every Disney character mural, we realised the Disney Wonder had been crafted specifically to charm, overwhelm, and immerse guests in a world of curated escapism. There is no subtlety about it. Disney wants you to feel the magic as soon as you arrive, and it works.
This review is partly a narrative of our experience but also an extended question and answer guide for people who, like us, are considering the Disney Wonder as their first ever cruise. I wanted this piece to be detailed, practical and genuinely useful to families who are debating whether a Disney cruise is worth the expense, the hype, and the time.
So if you are a first time cruiser, someone researching the Disney Wonder specifically, or simply someone who enjoys reading long form reviews of travel experiences, this is for you.

The Disney Wonder: A Ship With History and Heart
The ship itself, first launched in 1999, is part of Disneyโs older fleet, but you would never know that from the interior. The cabins, hallways, theatre spaces, restaurants and lounges have been refreshed repeatedly over the years. Everything from the carpets to the lighting design feels modern enough to avoid looking dated, but still carries that late nineties Disney charm that many millennials grew up with.
There is a timelessness to the shipโs aesthetic that works in its favour. Instead of chasing trends, the designers opted for warm colours, nautical motifs, character illustrations and decorative details that feel both classic and familiar. The result is an environment that is clean, well maintained, and comfortable for families with young children who tend to touch everything in sight.
While the ship is not enormous compared to newer mega liners from other cruise lines, it is large enough to host multiple restaurants, entertainment venues, a Broadway style theatre, various bars, kids clubs, pools, and lounge areas spread across several floors. You can spend an entire day walking around and still find areas you have not explored yet, then realise you have walked past your own room because the layout takes a little getting used to. But that is part of the fun. The wonder of exploration is built into the experience.
We boarded from Port Melbourneโs Station Pier (after arriving on the Route 109 light rail) and immediately noticed how efficiently Disney managed the crowds. The check in process was organised, the lines moved steadily, and staff members greeted families with the kind of enthusiasm that felt almost too cheerful for early afternoon. But that is Disney. It sets the tone early and maintains that energy throughout the voyage.
Once onboard, families typically rush to Cabanas on deck 9, the all you can eat buffet that serves breakfast and lunch. We did the same, carrying our bags while balancing plates of food and our toddler who was mesmerised by the sight of a machine that dispenses soft serve ice cream. It immediately felt like we had stumbled into a world designed entirely around family convenience.
During our first walk around deck 9, with its pools, splash zones, snack kiosks, deck chairs and ocean views stretching to the horizon, the kids were already in holiday mode. We had barely been on the ship for thirty minutes and they were demanding swimsuits, ice cream and unlimited exploring. They had no concept of pacing themselves. And honestly neither did we.

Life on the Water and the Reality of Seasickness
One thing that caught me off guard was what happened after the cruise ended. Despite being on level 2 of the ship, low enough to feel minimal movement, I suffered from seasickness after disembarking. Not during the cruise but after stepping onto land. This phenomenon is more common than people expect. The body spends days adjusting to the constant swaying rhythm of the ship and then reacts intensely once it stops.
Crossing the Bass Strait is notoriously rocky, and while the journey itself was manageable, my body continued to sway for almost three days afterwards. It felt like the world was tilting every time I stood still. If you are prone to motion sickness, this is something to be aware of. Medication helps for the trip itself, but the after effects can still surprise you.
Fortunately the ship has medical staff onboard and the guest services team are used to dealing with seasick passengers. But overall this was a minor inconvenience in what was an otherwise exceptional experience.

Disney as a First Time Cruise Line: Why It Works
Disney gets a lot of credit for its theme parks, films and merchandising empire, but the cruise line is something that deserves its own recognition. For families, especially those with young children, Disney feels safe. The brand is built on predictability, hospitality and the art of making parents feel like everything is under control. And in many ways, that is exactly what you want for your first cruise.
The staff are accommodating, the entertainment is world class, the food options are endless, and the facilities are designed with families in mind. Even the smallest details, like the placement of hand sanitising stations or the way the corridors are lit at night, speak to a thoughtfulness that is easy to appreciate when travelling with young children.
There are cruise lines that are cheaper, more luxurious, or better tailored to adults, but few strike the balance that Disney does. That balance is the reason this cruise works so well as an introduction to cruising. You feel like you are getting the full cruise experience, but wrapped in a family friendly cushion that absorbs many of the stresses that would normally come with travelling.
Dining on the Disney Wonder
One of the biggest highlights of a Disney Cruise is the food. On the Disney Wonder, aside from the adult-only Palo restaurant, specialty coffees, alcohol, and some bar items, all meals and drinks are included in the price. This includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks throughout the day.
Each evening, dinner is held at one of three main restaurants: Tritonโs, Tianaโs Place, and Animatorโs Palate. Tianaโs Place immerses you in the world of The Princess and the Frog, with live jazz music, Caribbean-inspired cuisine, and even mid-meal dance performances (where conga lines are formed with guest diners). Animatorโs Palate takes a more interactive approach. You start with black-and-white sketches that magically become colourful Disney animations as you eat, and guests can draw their own characters to be projected during dinner. Tritonโs, themed after The Little Mermaid, offers seafood-inspired continental cuisine with a French flair, ornate chandeliers, and stained glass dรฉcor. Halfway through dinner at Tritons, Mickey and friends often join for their musical number.
The Disney Cruise experience ensures you visit each restaurant at least once. While menus rotate slightly, the servers get to know you, your preferences, and even anticipate what you might want for drinks or additional courses. Kids are well looked after with their own menus, activity books, and crayons.
For breakfast and lunch, Cabanaโs on Deck 9 is a popular choice. It is all-you-can-eat, with no reservations needed. You can pick from a wide selection of dishes at Cabana’s. Also outside of Cabana’s on Deck 9 there are various joints offering snacks from pizza and burgers to soups and salads. Drinks like soft drinks, hot chocolate, and standard coffee are included, though specialty coffees are extra and can get pricey (~A$14).
Room service is included too, which is perfect for families with young kids who need a meal delivered while the little ones nap or play. Just be mindful that tipping is customary.

Activities for All Ages
The Disney Wonder is packed with activities for both kids and adults. The Disney Cruise app makes it easy to see what is happening each day. Though its a shame you can’t see anything on the app until you are on their WiFi. You can set reminders/favourites for the times for character meet-and-greets, trivia games, dance parties, karaoke, art and drawing sessions, and more.
Character meet-and-greets are a big draw. Characters include Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, Chip and Dale, Tiana, Rapunzel, Moana, Bluey, and Marvel superheroes like Spider-Man, Thor, and Black Widow. These meet-and-greets often have queues forming an hour or more before they start. One parent can queue while the other explores.
Other kid-focused activities include the Oceaneers Club for ages 3โ12, a nursery for babies and toddlers, and the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique where young girls can dress as Disney princesses. For older kids, the Edge or Vibe have dedicated spaces for them with their own seminars, games, and other forms of entertainment throughout the day.
Adults also have their options with the Azure Lounge, Cadillac Lounge, Crown & Fin Pub, Quiet Cove pool, and Signals Pool Bar on Deck 9. These areas are quieter and more sophisticated, perfect for a break from the constant energy of family activities.
Broadway-Style Shows and Deck Parties
Evenings on the Disney Wonder are unforgettable. Broadway-style shows like Golden Mickeys, Enchanted Dreams, and Frozen: The Musical showcase Disneyโs best songs, choreography, and animation in a theatre-quality production. Each show is immersive and enjoyable for adults and children alike.
Deck parties are another signature experience. Pirate Night is especially memorable. Guests receive bandanas before dinner-time, and the crew encourages everyone to get into the theme. Some families go all out with costumes, making it a truly interactive event. Fireworks over the ocean at night add extra magic to the celebrations.
Planning for First-Time Cruisers
For families new to cruising, the Disney Wonder is a great introduction. A few tips are worth knowing:
- Doors and walls in staterooms are magnetic, so many guests decorate with magnets, pictures, and hanging treat bags.
- All onboard transactions are in US dollars, which may involve conversion fees for international guests.
- Pre-gratuities can be paid before departure, but they are optional. Some guests feel pressured to pay them, but it is ultimately up to you.
- Activities like Palo, Royal Gatherings, and the Royal Tea require early booking. They fill up quickly, so reserving these in advance is highly recommended.
- Digital photos are best pre-purchased, especially if you plan on meeting multiple characters, because the onboard cameras are often higher quality than smartphones. It’s not worth it if you don’t plan to do the meet-and-greets.
Accommodation Highlights
Our stateroom with a window on Deck 2 was comfortable, functional, and compact. It included a double bed, sofa bed, bunk bed, bathroom with separate shower and toilet areas, a small fridge, and a television with normal American channels and on-demand Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars films.
The room layout works best with minimal luggage, as space is tight. Complimentary toiletries (like tissues, hair dryer, shampoo, conditioner and body wash) and towels are provided, but you need your own toothbrush. The separate bathroom sections make evening routines easier for families.
Stateroom location matters. Deck 5 is ideal for families with young kids, as it is close to the nursery and Oceaneers Club. Deck 8 is convenient for access to Deck 9 pools and food stations, while Deck 2 provides a quieter, more stable ride for those prone to seasickness, although Bass Strait conditions can be rough regardless of floor.

Kids Clubs and Nursery
One of the Disney Wonderโs biggest appeals for families is the dedicated childrenโs spaces. The Oceaneers Club caters to kids aged 3 to 12. It is divided into themed rooms, each offering unique activities like science experiments, arts and crafts, storytelling, and character interactions. Staff are highly trained and friendly, giving parents peace of mind.
For younger children, the nursery accommodates babies and toddlers. Spots are limited and must be booked in advance. The nursery includes play areas, toys, and rest spaces, allowing parents to enjoy adult-only activities or a quiet moment in their stateroom. The nursery is charged at hourly rates, whereas the Oceaneers Club only needs a Disney Band which is US$25 (but is refundable if you return the wrist band before disembarking).
Parents should note that children under three cannot be left unsupervised and must always have a booked slot for the nursery. The nursery is popular, so early planning is key.
Shore Excursions in Hobart
The Disney Wonder stops in Hobart, Tasmania, providing an opportunity for unique experiences ashore. Options range from guided city tours to wildlife encounters and adventure excursions.
For first-time visitors, a short city tour offers highlights like Salamanca Place, Battery Point, and the waterfront area. Local food markets and cafes make for a relaxed stop, especially if you have young children. For families interested in wildlife, excursions to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary or nearby farms allow kids to see kangaroos, wombats, and Tasmanian devils up close.
Excursions can be booked through Disney Cruise Line or independently. Disneyโs organised tours are convenient, but sometimes more expensive. Independent tours or self-guided trips provide flexibility, especially for families with toddlers who may need naps or early lunches.
For us, we opted for a short venture to the Hobart Museum and Art Gallery, which was free, and then through the Cat and Fiddle Arcade before returning to the ship in time for lunch.
Family-Friendly Tips for First-Time Cruisers
- Arrive Early: Boarding can take time. Make sure to have your documents ready and complete check-in online to reduce delays.
- Download the Disney Cruise App: This app is essential. It provides the daily schedule, dining reservations, character meet-and-greet timings, and activity sign-ups.
- Pack for All Weather: While cabins are climate-controlled, pools, deck parties, and excursions require sun protection, jackets for windy decks, and swimsuits.
- Plan Character Meet-and-Greets Strategically: Lines can be long. Have one parent queue while the other explores or relaxes with the kids.
- Bring Essentials for Young Children: Nappies, wipes, and comfort items for toddlers are helpful. Nursery and kids clubs do provide some supplies, but bringing familiar items makes children more comfortable.
- Budget for Extras: Specialty drinks, premium dining like Palo, and paid excursions are not included in the base fare. Keep track of your spending with a daily limit if desired.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the Disney Wonder is a family-focused, magical cruise experience. From the abundance of food and snacks to the exceptional entertainment and character interactions, the ship caters to all ages. While costs can add up for premium experiences, the inclusive meals and entertainment provide excellent value for a first-time cruise.
If you are considering a Disney Cruise for the first time, the Disney Wonder is an ideal choice. It introduces cruising in a fun, safe, and engaging environment, while still offering the excitement, magic, and service Disney is known for. Families will find something for everyone, from toddlers to adults, ensuring memories that last a lifetime.
