Matsuki Izakaya – Mount Waverley – a busy Japanese restaurant for sukiyaki, sushi, ramen and donburi

Matsuki Izakaya in Mount Waverley is on the same strip as Proud Peacock, the Vietnamese restaurant with the free snacks and drinks. Matsuki Izakaya serves Japanese dishes from sushi, tempura, ramen, donburi, yaki skewers to sukiyaki. Think izakaya, pub-style food, but delivered in a restaurant format and you have this restaurant, Matsuki.

We visited on a Saturday night hoping for some nice sushi and other Japanese cuisine. The area around the restaurant is its own shopping complex with an IGA, bank, cafes and various other specialty stores. There is sufficient parking at night, but it’s a labyrinth that is hard to follow.

We reserved our table for the night and realised while we were dining that a lot of people who turned up without a reservation were turned away.

On being seated, we realised that no one was going to provide us a menu, so we scanned the QR code to place our order. Though I noticed another table was able to order via one of the staff. The staff were quick to provide kids cups, bowls, utensils and a plate.

We opted for their Wagyu Sukiyaki for $38.90 with Udon for $4.90 plus their Matsuki Special Roll (8 pieces) for $18.90.

The Wagyu Sukiyaki came out very quickly with the hot stove and pot. It also came with the wagyu layered nicely on a plate, with egg yolk for dipping purposes, and the udon already cooked. We had to wait for the broth to heat up to soften all the nicely arranged vegetables and tofu in the pot. Once it was sufficiently hot, we added the wagyu to the pot for a quick cook and then dipped it in the egg yolk before tasting. It was a good experience.

I liked that the udon came warm and enjoyed the various mushrooms and other vegetables in the pot.

We also had their Matsuki Special Roll which was an intricately put together sushi with deep fried sushi roll portion, topped with fish and fish roe. The sushi was excellent and was quite spicy due to the togarashi and chilli spice added on top.

The restaurant itself isn’t big and only seated a few people. I liked the natural aesthetic with the modern conveniences of strip lights and lanterns. I was also happy to see a 5% discount with cash payments.
