We visited on a busy evening, and the venue was packed—buzzing with diners eager for its signature steaks. We were seated at a cosy table for four in the upstairs dining room, an elegant space defined by exposed brick arches, deep wood finishes, and a Parisian salon of framed artwork lining the walls. Downstairs, the bar area remains lively, complementing the restaurant’s spirited but refined vibe.
The menu is proud of its hearty, quality fare, particularly the steaks. Diners can choose from premium cuts such as Gippsland Lackland porterhouse, Cape Grim scotch fillet, and more—with many steaks dry-aged in-house for optimal flavour and tenderness. On our visit, I ordered the porterhouse, accompanied by thick-cut chips and a classic peppercorn sauce—a timeless steakhouse pairing. It was cooked to perfection: juicy, well-seasoned, and generously portioned, though not oversized. The chips were equally satisfying—crispy and well-seasoned.

Side dishes followed suit with solid quality. The smaller plate format favours a tapas-style dining experience, encouraging guests to mix and match. We added sides like mixed vegetables and garlic bread—each thoughtfully prepared and flavourful. While not extravagant, everything struck the right balance between portion size and taste.
Appetisers, desserts, and seafood also shine at the Railway Club Hotel. Starters like chicken liver parfait and salt and pepper calamari earn rave reviews. For seafood lovers, dishes like grilled tiger prawns with preserved lemon or the flounder are highlighted on the menu and praised by diners.
The restaurant’s wine list is extensive and well-curated, with both Australian classics and premium offerings by the glass or bottle—perfectly matched to a hearty steak. We opted for a glass of bold Shiraz, which complemented the steak beautifully.
Service was warm and attentive. Despite the crowd, staff were prompt in taking orders and checking in. We appreciated their ability to maintain calm efficiency without feeling rushed—a hallmark of well-run hospitality.

The Railway Club Hotel offers more than just food. It’s a favourite for local celebrations and functions, with options for private dining and group bookings. Parking is easy, with street parking available around Raglan Street—making it convenient for diners arriving by car.
There are a few minor drawbacks. Plate sizes can feel on the smaller side, especially if you’re expecting a large steak meal. Pricing, particularly on premium cuts, reflects the venue’s elevated positioning. And while the upstairs dining room oozes period charm, some may find the décor a little faded.
Even so, for a reliable steakhouse experience with soul, character, and local heritage, the Railway Club Hotel is hard to beat. It’s a place where Melbourne’s steak tradition lives on—where locals gather, steaks sizzle, and good conversation flows. If you’re after a classic night out with quality food and warm ambience, this Port Melbourne gem should top your list.
